Ok, we all know the fight didnt went as expected, actually for me it was quite a dissappointment knowing that Manny Pacquiao could pull off an entertaining fight, but it takes two to make it work, Mosley just wasn't up for Pacquiao. When he knockdown Mosley at the 3rd it was like Mosley switched to survival mode, hoping not to get knocked down again and survive the twelve rounds.

Here's the Pacquiao vs Mosley round per round recap

Round 1: Each guy worked hard to set up blows with their jabs. Pacquiao landed twice to the body and once to the face, and Mosley sneaked in a hard right to face. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-9 (scoring is unofficial).

Round 2: Pacquiao is the aggressor and Mosley appears a bit confused. Pacquiao lands a good left to the head followed by a right. The pair butt heads at the one-minute mark; all is OK. Pacquiao lands to the body, Mosley retreats. A left to the body and right to the face by Pacquiao. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads fight, 20-18.

Round 3: Pacquiao drops Mosley for the third time in his career, charging with a combination and dropping him with a left. Mosley is dazed at the 1:10 mark. Pacquiao going for the kill, left to the head and body. Again to the body and face. Mosley survives. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-8. Pacquiao leads, 30-26.

Round 4: Mosley slips. Pacquiao working the jab. He lands a hard left to Mosley's jaw. Mosley can't keep up. We expected this. Mosley jabs in vain. Pacquiao lands a left to the body. Hard combo by Mosley as Pacquiao covers. Pacquiao rallies, gets in two hard lefts to Mosley's face. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 40-35.

Round 5: Mosley has some crispness back. Pacquiao charges forward, as if he has great confidence. Mosley blocking some shots. Good left to the face by Pacquiao. Mosley definitely not his aggressive self of old. Pacquiao jabs to head and body. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 50-44.

Round 6: A soft head butt slows the action. Pacquiao goes left, lands a combination on attack. Mosley retreating. The action slows, and the crowd boos. Good short right by Pacquiao. Mosley gets in a right. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 60-53.

Round 7: Two good left uppercuts by Pacquiao, who ducks in for attack. Mosley shows no such ambition, and gets hit by rights to the body and head and a right-left combo. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 70-62.

Round 8: A big left to the head by Pacquiao symbolizes why Mosley's not engaging. Too much pain. More lefts continue to blunt Mosley's aged effort. The crowd booing the inaction by the challenger. Bad fight. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 80-71.

Round 9: Mosley sneers after a right-left charge by Pacquiao. Heads clash again, action resumes. Nice right by Pacquiao and good left hook by Mosley. A Pacquiao combo and left follows. Mosley sneaks in a good jab. Mosley to the body. Pacquiao hits Mosley in belly with right and snaps his head back with hard left. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 90-80.

Round 10: Referee Kenny Bayless wrongly awards Mosley a knockdown on a push. Mosley was going forward, but clearly pushed Pacquiao with a right. Pacquiao quickly gets back up, attacking. Pacquiao hits Mosley on ear with left. Another left. A straight left rolls Mosley's head back. Round is a 9-9 draw. Pacquiao leads, 99-89.

Round 11: Mosley working hard to avoid a knockout here, backpedaling from combinations as Pacquiao attacks. Mosley hugs Pacquiao, who gets free and unleashes a combination that backs up Mosley. Pacquiao roaring at end, Mosley looking for cover. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-9. Pacquiao leads, 109-98.

Round 12: Pacquiao completes a dominant effort, striking Mosley with more lefts to the head and body. He hammers Mosley with left-right to head. But Mosley survives. Pacquiao walks back frustrated to his corner with third straight unanimous decision coming. Pacquiao wins the round, 10-9. Pacquiao should win, 119-107.

Official verdict: Manny Pacquiao wins by unanimous decision. Scoring: Trowbridge, 119-108; Moretti, 120-108; Ford 120-107.

The Pacquiao vs Mosley finishes off as expected with Pacquiao having the unanimous decision but nevertheless Mosley put up an exciting fight up to the 12th round. Pacquiao dominated most of the fight and winning a unanimous decision.

On the third round, Pacquiao scored a knockdown while starting slow. Mosley put up his performance and was hoping to put off a knockout, he scored a knockdown on round 10 but was a wrong call, Mosley actually pushed Pacquiao down. This triggered Pacquiao to put on more pressure against Mosley making him pushed against the rope.

Pacquiao and his wife Jinkee checked in at the Mammoth suite in Mandalay Bay Hotel. It's a pretty luxurious room with a couple of bedrooms, with a whole set of living room and dining, 1 pool table and large bathrooms.

The percentage that Mosley might likely to win is at a slim, well according to some experts as far as i know. I dont know, its really hard to believe Mosley would win this fight, since he is already past his prime and Pacquiao is still making his own history, but that's an advantage for Mosley, nobody expects him to win, so he has a lot to gain from this fight than any other.

Mosley would be expecting a similar style with Pacquiao's previous fights but Mosley will have that counter punch. Pacquiao throws thousands of punches and I'm sure Mosley has that also planned. The Pacquiao vs Mosley fight could be one sided or an action packed fight. It can disprove fan or would be another boring fight. Each camp is already prepared and from the Fight Camp 360, i guess they are too. Most of us think that Pacquiao will win, considering each fighter's previous fights. According to Pacquiao's side, more specifically Freddie Roach, is that they are aiming for a KO, I'm sure that's going to be a the icing on the cake, but I wouldnt have my hopes up.

Currently, All Mosley can do is talk, and nothing but talk, since he lost a big fight with Mayweather and now he's taking up Pacquiao, which to me is very weird. He shouldnt have knelt down before Top Rank to make this fight happen.

Everybody's expecting Pacquiao to beat Mosley one way or the other, even my polls didnt even get Mosley 1 vote. But if Mosley pull's off the great upset then it will be a shocker to the boxing world and the whole fans. Mosley can earn the respect he longed for.

Mosley hasnt had a successful comeback with his previous fights, so what makes him say that he can back up his claims to defeat Pacquiao?

Pacquiao and Mosley has been training intensely and also shown at Fight Camp 360, although Pacquiao and Roach didnt have anything special to do during training, they are prepared and Pacquiao is on top shape.

We dont want to odd Mosley out, he's the underdog, if he wins this fight, he's going to prove his critics wrong, and regain his title. He knows this is a make or break, if he doesnt win this big fight then its time for him to retire, he's already past his prime and he should know that. Mosley has a lot to prepare since he's used to fighting opponents head to head but most of us know he's not gonna be fighting a big and slow opponent.

It may come as a shock to us if Manny would really fall on the canvass, I wonder how the world would react? I just might be blanked out for 3 mins and digest everything to accept the fact that Pacquiao got KO'd.

Pacquiao's last opponents where pretty much stationary, so its an easy target for Pacquiao. Mosley had one powerful punch against Mayweather at the 2nd round, shocking the world, I bet most people would have wanted that, see Mayweather lose but then again Mosley let it slip and wasn't able to have a comeback after.

Mosley's punch would be his deciding factor if he still has hit, or time has already passed him. He has to finish early or else it would be the same thing happening again, he might be able to hit Pacquiao, a big chance but if Pacquiao recovers from it, then Mosley must have a plan on how to continually push down Pacquiao.

Anything can change in this fight, if Pacquiao takes him for granted then Mosley can have than one chance.

Mosley is coming as an underdog in his fight against Pacquiao. Media and other social communities also gives Mosley a depressing idea that the odds are against him, all this hype makes him even more advantageous if he wins this fight. It's like the Douglas versus Tyson fight, nobody expected Tyson could get knocked out, Douglas was an underdog and odds were against him.

"I told Shane this fight is his Buster Douglas versus MikeTyson moment. You knock this dude out and all will be forgiven. Fans and media will forgive him for a few bad performances, his Aunt’s will forgive him for when he spilled grape juice on the couch as a kid, and his third grade teacher will forgive him for the test he failed back in the day. He just has to do what we know he’s capable of doing and pull off this upset and I promise you all will be forgiven."

If Mosley wins this fight, its an automatic respect and credibility, his effort would be all worth it, more than Mayweather himself.

A little review about Mosley's last fight.

I've got the chance to watch a replay of Mosley's last fight against Mayweather. Just prepping up for the Pacquiao vs Mosley, i just want to know how they perform from their previous fight.

It's not debatable anymore that Pacquiao has been consistently winning fights and hasnt lost yet. His fight was not really that exciting but he's done a good job. It makes one think that he can easily finish off Mosley. When CBS featured the Pacquiao vs Mosley Camp 360, we could closely see what's happening on each fighter's camp, intensely training for their big fight.

While on the other side, Mosley hasnt been performing too well. He lost to Mayweather and when I was watching his fight again, it wasn't as good as before. He just seems a bit slow for me but still packs a good punch, this could spell a make or break for Pacquiao.

He could be at his top starting from round 1 - 5 and we might be seeing a tired Mosley after that. So I bet he's gonna finish the fight early.

Instead of sparring with fighters with the same size and built as Pacquiao to actually simulate his fighting style, Mosley went a step ahead to fight with bigger sparring partners.

According to him, it will make him used to hard punches that Pacquiao will throw at him on May 7.

“Lately, I’ve been dealing with bigger guys, monsters. To have a guy with a smaller frame in front of me this time, he doesn’t intimidate me at all,” he said.

Pacquiao is shorter and smaller than Mosley but throws hard punches that can't be underestimated. Although Mosley had success in fighting with smaller fighters but this one isnt a guarantee.

Mosley has been studying Pacquiao's previous fights and coming up with a plan to win this fight.

Mosley's training in Big Bear california was jam packed with media as he shows his skills in training.

On the other hand, Pacquiao is on closed doors but will be open to the media in the next few days.

Now, this is just my personal opinion about the Pacquiao vs Mosley fight, im a huge fan of both fighters but somehow you gotta choose sides. As of this writing my mind is betting on Pacquiao but i dont see him knocking out Mosley. The reason is Pacquiao's previous fights haven't been really as entertaining as before, although he proved to be the best by defeating renowned fighters, I still wasnt convinced. Pacquiao's last fights didnt knock anyone or maybe almost but still, no KO's, so I wont be expecting a KO in his fight with Mosley. Surely he did an impressive 2 round knockout with Hatton, but he's out of the picture, that guy was slacking.

I just hope Pacquiao is not over confident in this fight, im sure he also doesnt want to underestimate Mosley coz it will surely open up a chance for Mosley to actually KO Pacquiao.

In the other hand, most probably there would be a chance for Mosley to land that big pucnh just enough to move Pacquiao off his feet, yeah he did that to Mayweather but lost the chance to follow.

To say who's gonna be winning this fight, I dont know. Let's just wait and build up that excitement.

I guess so, maybe for the last time. Boxing for a fighter does not last long, for the case of Pacquiao, it will be one last fight or 2, in which case he's at his top already, if he wins this fight, then it's all good. We all know Pacquiao is like the superman in boxing, his speed, stamina, and power cant be compared less to the hall of famers. He's got the world to respect him not just a boxer but for what he is, his countrymen are proud being able to do public service as a congressman.

Let's not put all hopes up in Pacquiao, he will be facing a tougher opponent with nothing to lose but all to gain, Mosley. Mosley has been training intensely for this big fight against Pacquiao, it will not be easy for both. Pacquiao has leveled up to facing bigger opponents while Mosley is facing a world champion.

But the question still remains after this, will Pacquiao be facing Mayweather? or will this just go down the drain?

Manny Pacquiao has been declared as the Pound-for-Pound champion in boxing, for the last 6 years he has been jumping one step to another from super featherweight to welterweight and hasn't lost since. He has been defeating opponents like Oscar De La Hoya, a 2 round KO of Ricky Hatton, and the likes of Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito.

Shane Mosley hasnt been active for quite a while since his last fight against a close fight to Cotto and lost to Mayweather.

Discussions have been going on around to who will win this fight, Pacquiao or Mosley? Even if this fight isnt the fans have been asking for it will still be worth to watch, why? Its because there is no other fight that is bigger than this one. Mosley was being ranked as the top 5 potential opponents for Manny Pacquiao which is now true and will be held this May 2011 at the MGM Grand Las Vegas.

All in all, I wouldnt say final conclusions yet but here's my analysis.
If Mosley was on his prime today he would be on the top. He has the experience and went a lot with great fighters. But his opponent is different, Pacquiao is fast and moves a lot, not the same as what Mosley was fighting before. Mosley is a big target but Pacquiao is smaller and would be receiving a dense punch from Mosley. It may be impossible for Pacquiao to KO Mosley but certainly I see it as the same fight with Cotto, Clottey and De La Hoya.

Two judges scored it 119-109 and another had it 118-110 in favor of Mayweather.

The time for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shane Mosley to stop talking and start punching is drawing near tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Following an eight-bout undercard that lasted more than five hours, Mosley, a world champion at three weights, is the first of the main-event fighters into the crowded ring, leading an entourage of about a half-dozen people on the slow, short walk from the dressing room into the sold-out arena at 8:25 p.m.

That marks the first time the Pomona fighter has been in a boxing ring for a fight since he beat Antonio Margarito at Staples Center in January 2009, an absence of 461 days.

Mayweather, unbeaten in 40 fights, follows a full five minutes later with an over-of-top entrance that includes fireworks and a live musical performance music by the O'Jays, who sign "For the Love of Money" as they make their way into the ring.

If the judges were scoring this, they probably would have given the entrance to Mayweather, though they certainly should have deducted points for excessive use of arrogance.

Among the celebrities in attendance are former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, who made a much-more-understated entrance just before the fifth round of the final undercard bout. Other luminaries ringside include former boxers Oscar De La Hoya; Sugar Ray Leonard and Mike Tyson; rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs; basketball’s Magic Johnson; California Gov. Whenever Mosley gets close Mayweather either backs away -- waaaay away -- or wraps his opponent in a clinch. Mosley throws a wild left and Mayweather responds with a right that lands. Both fighters throw wild punches in the final seconds.

Round 11: In his corner between rounds, Mosley looks like a beaten fighter. He's still jittery, bouncing on his toes in the ring but Mayweather is toying with him. Mayweather is fighting defensively, but that's also his best offense -- let Mosley miss with a punch and counter by landing a stronger one. Mayweather misses with both punches in a combination with 1:07 to go. Mayweather lands a left with about 25 seconds left but it didn't have much steam. Mayweather gets off another right to the side of Mosley's head.

Round 10: Mayweather is leaning back, avoiding the punches that Mosley was landing in the opening two rounds. He gets off two short, solid rights in the opening seconds, then follows it with a left about a half-minute later. Perhaps out of fatigue, Mosley's hands are down and that's making Mayweather's job a little easier. Mosley is showing some fight but not enough and Mayweather gets off a good combination with about a minute left in the round. Mosley's face is red and flushed, though it's unclear if any of that is blood.

Round 9: Mosley is in danger of being knocked out. He needs to regain the pace he had in the first two rounds but it doesn't appear to be in him. Mayweather, on the other hand -- most likely a strong right -- looks to be one clean punch away from ending this. Mayweather is landing short lefts, mostly to the side or back of Mosley's head where they aren't doing much damage. He starts the last minute of the round with a short right that stung Mosley. Mayweather for the first time looks a bit fatigued.

Round 8: Mosley does not appear to be bleeding but his eyes are swollen. Mayweather still looks fresh. Mosley is warned by Bayless for clinching and throwing his opponent into the ropes. As the two fighters go back to the center of the ring, Mayweather catches Mosley with a sharp left that almost looks like a sucker punch. Mayweather lands another hard right with 1:15 to go. Mosley is still breathing open-mouthed while Mayweather's lips are clenched tight around his mouthpiece.

Round 7: The fight is more than half over and Mayweather is beginning to take control. Mayweather lands a left to the side of Mosley's head about 50 seconds into the round. A strong right again stops Mosley's advance. Another strong right to the face with about 62 seconds left rocks Mosley, and Mayweather lands another punch a few seconds later. Mosley charges back but he's hurt.

Round 6: Mayweather is gaining confidence with each round. Mayweather continues trying to lure Mosley close. A left jab stops just short of Mosley's nose. Mayweather lands a strong right that shook Mosley. Then Mayweather reaches him with another short right. Mayweather is missing with his lefts, though, Mosley's mouth is open and he may be feeling his 461-day layoff. Mayweather doesn't seem to be breathing hard.

Round 5: While Mosley keeps looking low, Mayweather is having some success going over the top. Now Mosley is clinching. Mosley's eyes are swelling. Mayweather is, at time, seeming to invite Mosley close by dropping his hands. Mosley remains cautious and at a distance. Mayweather misses with a wild hook but later lands a right.

Round 4: Mayweather is probing rather than just swinging at the start of this round. But Mosley still won't let him close. Mosley's speed clearly has Mayweather worried and you have to wonder what an even faster fighter like Manny Pacquiao would do to Mayweather. Mayweather lands a right counterpunch midway through the round. He lands a jab and another right in the final 40 seconds. Mosley's pace has slowed considerably and he spends much of the last half-minute backing up.

Round 3: Mosley twice stung Mayweather with rights in the second round so Mayweather tries to go on the offensive in the third. But that's not his game. He looks angry, not patient. Mosley has clearly gotten Mayweather out of his game as Mayweather is now going forward rather than laying back waiting to counter. Mayweather's punches aren't finding their range and now Mosley appears content to lay back. Mayweather is much more active but his punches aren't effective. The pace slows down markedly in the final minute.

Round 2: Mosley races out and ducks again, this time grabbing Mayweather around the waist and wrestling him into a neutral corner. Mayweather ducks a strong right. Mosley ducks a wild left, then lands a right. Mayweather clinches but Mosley breaks away and chases after him. Mayweather appears flustered. Mosley's speed is stunning him. The best Mayweather can do is clinch. Mosley is all over him, in the center of the ring, on the ropes. Mayweather's only answer is to clinch, trying to slow the aggressive Mosley's charge. The crowd is on its feet chanting "Mosley! Mosley! Mosley!"

Round 1: Mosley comes charging out to the center of the ring at the bell. Twice he ducks low but can't get off a punch. Mosley is feeling out Mayweather with this right, holding the left cocked. He's active but Mayweather won't let him near. Mayweather lands two rights midway through the round and Mosley stumbles trying to back away but the referee rules it is not a knockdown. Mosley never fully went down anyway. The pair clinch a half-dozen times in the round.

Mayweather said he will not fight any fighter who doesnt submit to the blood testing even if the Nevada State Athletic Commission only needs fighters to undergo urine tests.

The reason Mayweather has this demand is because PED's are putting fighters at risk and too dangerous for their health.

Because of this, Mosley agreed to Mayweather's demands in the Olympic-style blood testing.

This could be one of the major steps the boxing industry would take in making this drug testing be implemented. This could be a major change in the boxing world.

Although blood testing hasnt been the perfect tool in determining a player has using performance enhancing drugs, it proves that urine testing is a much better alternative for testing everything except HGH.

Mayweather can be one of the biggest contributor in boxing, his fights can generate up to $48.6 million in pay-per-view.

According to Shane Mosley said he already has a fight plan to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. on their fight on May 1 at the MGM Grand Las Vegas, Nevada in the welterweight class.

“Floyd is the type of fighter who, if he doesn't feel comfortable or confident, he's not going to fight you. So I have to be ready for that type of mentality that he has of touching and moving, touching and moving. I have to make it difficult for him to just touch and move,” Mosley said in an interview.

“So that's going to be one of the assignments is to make it harder for him to get his shots off so that he fights me a little bit. When he fights me, that will open him up for my speed and power,” he added.

“With Floyd, you have to focus on everything. You have to have a broad picture,” said Mosley.

“I'm pretty sure that Floyd will feel more power in this fight that he will have ever had to feel… And if I can get that knockout, if I get that one shot, and if I can get him hurt, then I'm going to be all over him,” he noted.

There's less than a month to go until the ultra-intriguing welterweight match-up that is "Sugar" Shane Mosley Vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. will take place in Las Vegas. And though the main event is good enough to ensure fans will be content to hand over their pay-per-view cash, the under-card of a big show always helps make the occasion that much more exciting. And the still-taking-shape under-card for May 1st at The MGM Grand is looking pretty good.

All set to fight on the big WBA welterweight title fight show are: hot prospects Saul Alvarez, Daniel Jacobs and George Groves, and former WBO super-bantamweight ruler Daniel Ponce de Leon..

De Leon, the 29-year-old Mexican banger, will face the useful Cornelius Lock over a scheduled ten-rounds at featherweight. A good, solid-looking match-up, this one could well provide some thrills. Southpaw De Leon, 38-2-1(32) has won four fights in a row since his shocking, one-round loss at the hands of Juan Manuel Lopez, and a win over 31-year-old Lock, also a lefty, would help his chances of once again challenging for a major title.

Lock, 19-4-1(12) has been in some good fights before, even though he lost a couple of them. Having been stopped during his career, by Cristobal Cruz (TKO by 8 in 2004)and by Mario Santiago (TKO by 5 in 2005), Lock could be in some trouble against the powerful fists of De Leon. However, having said that, those TKO's were a long time ago, and Lock took a long layoff after the Santiago defeat.

Beaten on points by Antonio Escalante in his last-but-one outing, Lock rebounded with an impressive 5th-round stoppage of the undefeated Orlando Cruz last September. Against the older, slower man, the Detroit boxer will be looking to get another good scalp on his record.

As for Alvarez, the 19-year-old Mexican hotshot will face Jose Miguel Cotto, brother of Miguel Cotto. Defending his NABF welterweight belt, Alvarez will score his biggest win if he can see off the once-beaten 32-year-old next month. The experienced Cotto has been in with good men like Juan Diaz (a points loss), Ivan Hernandez and Prawet Singwancha (a draw for the WBA 135-pound title), and Alvarez must be given credit for stepping up in class whilst still a teenager. This fight could well be the pick of the under-card on May 1st.

As for Groves and Jacobs, both guys will face as yet unannounced foes. Both unbeaten, the super-middleweight and the middleweight will be looking to stay that way. 22-year-old Groves, who sensationally won the Commonwealth title at 168-pounds in only his ninth fight, on the Haye-Ruiz card last week, is especially thrilled to be featured on such an illustrious show.

23-year-old Jacobs, now 19-0, also fought recently; having won in one-round on March 27th. He too will be looking to shine on the big bill. It will be most interesting to see who Groves and Jacobs get to share the ring with them.

Unfortunately the HBO episode of Sitdown: Mayweather vs Mosley was not that exciting, with just under 10 minutes of viewing. But it did go very well, it made it more exciting for me and especially for the viewers, adding much anticipation on the May 1 Fight, Who R U Picking? Floyd Mayweather vs Shane Mosley.

It featured the two Welterweight stars, Mayweather and Mosley sitting in front each other in a table, Max Kellerman was with them introducing the topics and directing the banter. It was good and sharp.

Shane Mosley told Floyd Mayweather that Mayweather wanted to be like Shane Mosley when Mayweather was starting out. Now Mayweather told Mosley that Mosley would have to prove it to him in the ring. As the show started to get exciting then it ended.

Despite his announcement of possible retirement from professional boxing in deference to his mother's wishes for him to retire now for good, many of his local boxing fans believe that the pound-for-pound king will remain active for at least one more year.

The popular Filipino boxer is expected to make a deal with his mother for one last fight before retiring. It may be recalled that Pacquiao promised his mother after his bout with Miguel Cotto that he will do one last fight before hanging up his gloves. That one last bout was his recent encounter with Joshua Clottey of Ghana at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

One of the compelling reasons for Pacquiao to remain active for another year is probably the thought of beating Floyd Mayweather, Jr who remains undefeated in his entire professional boxing career. Mayweather and his camp have thrown too much 'trash' on the Filipino boxer. Pacquiao's local boxing fans say that the Filipino boxer should settle the long-drawn word war between him and Mayweather inside the ring.

He’s always told me that he wanted to do that at least once in the fight and I told him ‘Don’t do it!’. He laughed and he had a big smile on his face and I said ‘The sonofagum did it’. He wanted to get that out of his system I hope.”

His relationship with Manny Pacquiao…
“The thing is that I don’t hang out with him and don’t go out to socialize with him too much. I want to keep that separation between trainer and fighter. I learned once in my life when I got to close to my fighter and we became friends and I told him to do something and he laughed and not take me seriously. [That was] my first champion Virgil Hill. I told him ‘I mean it, get to work’. But we became too close and it affected our working relationship.”

Putting his foot down…
“The thing is that I do have to put my foot down sometimes. In the last camp he came to the gym and everyone was tired and sleep and I asked them what was wrong. He said that they were singing karaoke until 2 AM. I got the bunch together and I told them all off and I told them we were here for a fight and we were here for training camp. I said curfew is at 9 o’clock and I said to head security ‘What were you doing?’ and he said ‘I was signing’. I just said ‘Oh my god’. [Pacquiao] was very quiet for two days. He iced me for two days. It worked itself out. I heard that he was more interested in finding who ratted him out.”

Does Roach believe Mayweather vs. Pacquiao will ever happen?
“I believe so. The thing is, Mayweather is a good fighter and I just believe he came up with these excuses because he wasn’t ready for Pacquiao yet. He only had one fight in two years and I think he needed more time. He’s got another fight coming up of course and after that all of the rust will be gone if he beats Mosley. He’s in a tough fight though. The thing is Shane has a little bit of trouble for boxers and I think it’s a good fight for Mayweather. I think he will win on points. Then he will be sharp and ready for a guy like Pacquiao.”

His thoughts on drug testing…
“The thing is that we have never flunked a test before. We have tested before and after every fight. If we were on steroids we wouldn’t pass. It’s not like there isn’t testing and it’s not like they just test you some times. If you are in a title fight they test you every time and the commission has been doing that for a long time. The Olympic style drug testing they couldn’t guarantee that they wouldn’t do it the day before the fight. That’s an issue because Manny Pacquiao doesn’t like giving blood. I told him that that they can do urine, saliva, hair test, and any test in the world that would show exactly the same thing as blood. You see when he gets cut he doesn’t handle it well. He doesn’t like blood. I would but the thing is that everyone knows that he blames when he lost to Morales the first time because he had to give blood the day before the fight. I lose him for about three days. He’s not as strong. I’m not sure about that. He just feels that it’s in his head that it affects him for like three days and then he starts feeling better after that.”

His thoughts on Mayweather’s mission to clean up the sport…
“I think that Mayweather is going to let the commission do their job just as they always do. He said that he wants to clean the sport up but I don’t think steroids are that used in boxing to be honest. It’s part of our life and the society that we live in today. Again, let the commission do their job and we aren’t going to let Mayweather run the show, that’s for sure. That’s giving the first two rounds away. Why would I do that? The next thing you know he’ll be saying we are fighting with 16 ounce gloves or in two minute rounds. We’re going to go with what the commission says and I’m sure there is going to be a tradeoff between Manny dropping the lawsuit and him dropping the drug test.”

His own career and knowing when to call it a day…
“Eddie Futch, my coach, told me to retire five fights before I did. I fought five more times and I lost four of the five so he’s probably right. I might not have Parkinson’s disease if I did. I was just really frustrated. I put my whole life into it and I wanted to be a world champion. I cried that day when he told me it was over and it was just hard to realize that. It’s hard to swallow. It’s something I chose and something I did but I am happy.”

Pacquiao picking Mosley to beat Mayweather

By Esteban Garduno: Manny Pacquiao has come up with his own prediction for the May 1st clash between unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shane Mosley, saying to the Yahoo Philippine News “I pick Mosley to win that fight because he can throw a lot of punches compared to Mayweather, who’s a very defensive boxer. Defense can’t win fights, especially against a fighter like Mosley who relies on speed.” Someone needs to break the news to Pacquiao that defense can and does win fights. Actually, defense wins fights all the time in boxing. Just mindlessly throwing punches doesn’t win fights.

Pacquiao looked awful in his recent fight against Joshua Clottey, throwing a lot of punches at Clottey’s gloves all night long seemingly without trying to aim them. If that was Mayweather who was in the ring with Clottey on that night, I think Pacquiao would have been picking up his teeth of the canvas and wondering what hit him. Pacquiao looked defenseless against Clottey, and was nailed frequently whenever Clottey had it in his mind to throw a punch.

If Pacquiao had used his wide open high volume punch attack against Mayweather, he would have been getting picked apart all night long. Clottey just stood in front of Pacquiao with his gloves covering up his face. It was an easy target for Pacquiao. There’s no way that Mayweather would be stupid enough to fight in such a primitive, backwards style like this against Mosley. That would be like flushing down the toilet all the things that Mayweather has learned over the years and decided to fight in a self-defeating manner.

I wonder if it’s a case of wishful thinking on Pacquiao’s part by saying he thinks Mosley will beat Mayweather? After all, if Mosley gets rid of Mayweather for Pacquiao, the pressure would be off of Pacquiao as far as fighting Mayweather. No one in their right mind would bug Pacquiao about taking on the dangerous Mayweather and risk getting humiliated in front of the entire world.

Pacquiao then would be free to fight more Top Rank guys like Miguel Cotto, Clottey, Yuri Foreman and Edwin Valero without anyone saying anything about it. I think Mayweather will totally destroy Pacquiao in one of the worst one-sided fights you’ve ever seen before. But if Mayweather was to get beaten by Mosley, then Pacquiao would be free to move on and fight whoever without much pressure.

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, likes the idea of Pacquiao fighting Mosley rather than Mayweather. Who can blame Roach? If you had a choice of putting your fighter in with a guy that you felt he could beat or putting him in with a fighter that you think he might struggle and possibly lose to, who would you want him to fight? Roach says “I like Shane because he’s a real fighter. It will be a more exciting fight that than the one involving Mayweather.”

Roach also said that the fight between Clottey and Pacquiao would be a more exciting fight than a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao. As you can see, Roach’s ability to judge fights needs some minor corrections. Clottey a better opponent than Mayweather? Yeah, right, Roach.

Manny Pacquiao speaks out on Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley

This week when Manny Pacquiao came home to the Philippines after defeating Joshua Clottey at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, he spoke to reporters in regards to Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. Although Pacquiao strongly feels "Money" Mayweather Jr. needs him more to bolster his career, he is open to fight "Money" Mayweather Jr. anytime.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, in regards to fighting "Money" Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao stated: "I am open to him fighting me anytime he wants to." That to me sounds like Pacquiao is ready for Mayweather before he calls it quits
(retires). There has been a lot of talk (reports) that Pacquiao could or may retire before facing Mayweather.

Of course for Pacquiao to even consider facing "Money" Mayweather Jr., he must first get past "Sugar" Shane Mosley, who he faces on May 1st.

In regards to "Money" Mayweather vs "Sugar" Shane, Pacquiao feels Mayweather should win, but told reporters on Monday he will fight Mosley should Mayweather fail. "He should win against Mosley," stated Pacquiao, adding: "If not, Mosley and I will fight."

Is Floyd Mayweather doing Boxing a favor?

By Ryan Dunn: I just read a great article by Lem Satterfield regarding the USADA testing protocols being employed in the Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley, “Who R U Picking?” Superfight coming up on May 1. I have to say, the more I read about the protocol and how it applies to the world of boxing, the more enamored I become with it.

I like the idea of fighters providing whereabout information up front, so that they may be found any time, any where, to be tested for any performance enhancing drugs by the doctors for the USADA. I also like the idea that there are “real” penalties; like a possible 2-year suspension and disqualification for the bout itself.

Travis Tygart, president of The United States Anti-Doping Agency explained how the testing would work in the Mayweather-Mosley fight, which is taking place in the wake of Mosley’s fight with Berto falling through, and Mayweather’s negotiations with Pacquiao falling through. But this match-up may serve a bigger role in boxing than what happens inside the ring.

While I may not entirely agree with Mayweather’s motives for demanding the USADA protocol in his negotiations with Manny Pacquiao, he and Shane Mosley have both agreed to the same stringent request. In fact, by putting the heat on Pacquiao, Floyd may have inadvertently (or intentionally) just done boxing the biggest favor in recent years.

By instating this rigorous testing protocol (random, unlimited blood and urine all the way up to fight-night) for a match-up which will be heavily promoted (by Golden Boy Promotions), publicized (by HBO’s 24/7 and the media/internet), and viewed (by us, the fans), he will put his new regime center-stage for the world to judge. And who doesn’t support clean boxing for all parties involved? Boxing is a dangerous sport; people can die inside the ring; boxers often starve themselves of nutrients in order to make weight; and nobody wants a juiced up opponent knocking the life out of his opponent.

Of course those are extreme circumstances, but they are realities nonetheless, whether you think steroids can turn you into the Incredible Hulk or not. Which brings this back to the point: If things go the way I think they are going to go (there are already rumors of the Boxing Commissions considering rule changes in their drug-testing protocols as early as this September), then Floyd Mayweather will have single-handedly transformed the landscape of boxing as we know it.

I am of the opinion that no single athlete is bigger than the sport they are paid to perform, and Floyd is no exception. I disagree that drug-testing should be allowed to be negotiated in a contract. I think that boxers, if they want rules changed, should bring their cases to the rule-makers, so they can instate them in a professional manner. And yet… Floyd Mayweather, by bringing his case to the court of public opinion, may have fast-tracked what would have otherwise been a slow and rigorous process consisting of endless lobbying, back-room negotiations, and painful deliberations.

In a perfect world, boxers and their promoters (and Vegas) should have less control over the sport, with more control going back to the Boxing Commissions. John McCain had it right when he requested there be a National Boxing Commission which oversaw all boxers for total equality, and I also agree with Floyd Mayweather whole-heartedly that the sport needs better Anti-Doping policies put into place as soon as possible. (I’ll save my invasive vs. non-invasive drug-testing rant for another article.)

So let’s all take this moment to thank Floyd Mayweather Jr. (whether you love him or hate him) for exposing a true weakness in the sport of boxing. And let’s hope that his controversial road to repairing the sport can translate into something ultimately positive and effective toward the evolution of Boxing Commissions across the country.

Face Off: Mayweather vs Mosley Tonight on HBO

According to a press release, HBO will air the replay of last week’s super welterweight fight between Manny Pacquiao vs Joshua Clottey at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Immediately after that at 12:00 midnight HBO will be showing “FACE OFF: MAYWEATHER VS. MOSLEY” ON HBO, an eight minute special featuring a compelling intimate interview by Max Kellerman of both Mayweather and Mosley, who will be seated facing each other.

Mayweather-Mosley Trade Words Face To Face on HBO

To further hype their welterweight mega-fight on May 1 in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBA champion Shane Mosley sat down with HBO's Max Kellerman to tape a face to face segment where both fighters would speak on a variety of topics from their decade long rivalry.

Kellerman brought up last September's verbal confrontation between the fighters, which took place when Mosley entered the ring after Mayweather won a decision over Juan Manuel Marquez.

"When it got crazy in the ring. I told them 'I'm not the matchmaker, I'm not the matchmaker. Eventually I will make it happen.' Everything takes time and I'm happy that we're facing each other on May 1st," Mayweather said.

Kellerman brought out a magazine from 1999, where Mayweather and Mosley were featured on the cover and the title of the cover page said "who is the future of boxing?" Kellerman asked Mosley for his opinion on why Mayweather, between the two of them, went on to become such a mega-star. Mosley thinks it's a combination of Mayweather's mouth and his skills.

"He has the gift of gab and he really talks a lot of smack. I have to give it to him because he's been backing it up and beating these guys down," Mosley said."When I get in there you are going to feel me. You are going to feel every bit of me."

Mayweather answered back - "Come May 1st he's going to have to make me respect his skills."

And then Mosley cut in - "The reason I fought [Antonio] Margarito is because I wanted to become the best welterweight out there and I did that."

Mayweather hit back - "I proved that I'm the best. That's what you're here to try to do. 40 have tried and all 40 have had a gameplan. Out of the 40, some say 'oh, I hit hard, I'm super strong or I'm fast."

Mosley brought up a moment from the year 2000, when he was undefeated and one of the best pound for pound fighters in the sport. He went to Mayweather's dressing room before a fight and claims Mayweather told him 'I think you're a great fighter and I want to be just like you when I get up in the ranks.'

Mayweather jumped in - "Guess what Shane, I never wanted to be like no fighter. I wanted to be the fight Floyd Mayweather. Like I said, come May 1st you're going to have to make me respect your fighting skills."

Mosley - "And I will."

Mayweather - "But you're going to have to show me."

Mosley - "I'm going to show you and everybody else around."

Mayweather - "You're going to have to show me. You don't have to show them, you have to show me."

Mosley - "You're going to find out too."

Mosley was asked for his opinion on Manny Pacquiao turning him down, while Mayweather agreed to fight him.

"I realized one thing. He fights for money. He wants to be the best but he wants to make sure the money and the check is in there. He wants to fight the best guy. Pacquiao didn't fight him so he fights me, the next best guy with the biggest paycheck," Mosley said.

Mayweather answered to Mosley's claims -"Who wants a million dollar face with a few dollars in their pockets. People don't know what I went through in life. My mother was on drugs. I never had a stable home. My dad went to prison. I want my kids to have something. Like I said before, when it's all said and done - all belts do is collect dust."

Kellerman asked Mayweather for his opinion on Mosley's win over Margarito.

"I was glad he won because he's a black American and I'm a black American. Of course I rooted him on, I wanted him to win," Mayweather said.

Kellerman asked Mosley for his thoughts on how a fighter can beat Mayweather.

"He gets in there and razzle dazzles and potshots these fighters. They run trying to bully him. And they don't realize that he's been doing this all his life. My style is versatile. I can box when I want to. I can punch when I want to. I can go toe to toe or whatever. That's what makes me difficult. I can hit you with either hand. So you really have to figure out what I'm going to do," Mosley said.

Mayweather later said: "Who wouldn't want to put Mosley on their resume. May 1st, I'm going to be the same Floyd Mayweather."

Mosley said - "May 1st is going to symbolize Mayweather's first loss."

And Mayweather said - "He's a fighter, he's supposed to say that, but guess what - there is no blueprint on how to beat me."

Does Pacquiao lack the ring expertise to beat Mayweather and Mosley?

By Esteban Garduno: I have to admit that what I saw of Manny Pacquiao against Joshua Clottey didn’t give me a feeling that Pacquiao could beat or even compete with the likes of Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Boxing is a science, a sport of the mind if you will. The fighters are ones that are experts at ring strategy and who know how to capitalize on their opponents mistakes. I see Mosley and Mayweather being the ultimate ideal at coming up with a strategy to beat their opponents and then following it to the letter. Sadly, I didn’t see that from Pacquiao in his fight with Clottey.

If there was a strategy behind him throwing 1200 punches – many of them seemingly aimed at Clottey’s gloves for some reason – I can’t understand it. I can’t see Mosley and Mayweather throwing punches at an opponent’s gloves for 12 solid rounds. And I can’t see either of them throwing 1200 of those punches, knowing that most of them are getting blocked.

Those guys would have gotten a clue probably immediately that it’s a waste of time to throw punches down the middle straight at Clottey’s gloves. So why didn’t Pacquiao figure this out? Why did he waste punches round after rounds, just spraying punches at Clottey’s gloves, as if he was hoping they would drop at some point. I think there no was real plan behind it.

It seemed like madness to me to throw punches that were being blocked. It was impressive that Pacquiao could average 100 punches thrown per found for 12 rounds, but that’s not really a big deal. A lot of fighters can do this. He’s not the first or the last fighters that will throw that many punches.

Bigger fighters like Joe Calzaghe, a super middleweight, and Paul Williams, a light middleweight, both have averaged over 100 punches per round in a lot of their fights. The difference here is that they seem much better at placing their shots in areas where they feel that they have a better chance of landing.

What I saw of Pacquiao in his fight with Clottey was a fighter that was just throwing a massive amount of punches without aiming them. I couldn’t make out what Roach was telling Pacquiao in between rounds, because he was whispering to him a lot of the time. However, I would like to have hoped that Roach was telling Pacquiao to start doing a better job of throwing shots in different areas than just the gloves of Clottey.

Drug testing detailed for Mayweather-Mosley fight

Representatives of boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shane Mosley and Golden Boy Promotions on Thursday revealed their anti-doping procedures for their May 1 welterweight title fight in Las Vegas.

The head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, Travis Tygart, said Mayweather and Mosley will be subjected to random urine and/or blood tests from now "until and after the fight." In addition to urine tests for steroids, blood tests will be implemented to search for such performance-enhancers as human growth hormone, synthetic hemoglobin and blood transfusions, Tygart said.

A positive test, Tygart said, would leave the boxer suspended from the sport for two years, a condition he said both fighters have agreed to.

Mayweather's desire for a more stringent testing program than what Nevada offers — random urine testing before and immediately after the bout — contributed to the failed negotiations to stage a fight against Manny Pacquiao earlier this year.

Mayweather, Mosley agree to Olympic-style drug testing

Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley have agreed to begin an Olympic-style drug testing program from Monday ahead of their May 1 bout in Las Vegas, the boxers said in a conference call.

The US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) protocol includes random blood tests before and after the fight.

A proposed showdown between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fell through in January after the Filipino refused to yield to the American's demand for random blood testing within three weeks of the bout.

"I just want to show the world that boxing is a clean sport and it is my hope that all fighters will take a similar stance," said Mayweather Thursday.

Mosley agreed the program made sense.

"I think the testing program is a great idea and I did not hesitate for a minute about agreeing to it."

Samples are screened for drugs currently banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), including human growth hormone.

USADA chief Travis Tygart hailed their decision to submit to stringent testing.

"I believe today is another watershed moment in the advancement of anti-doping," Tygart said in the conference call.

"For the first time, we're seeing professional athletes in the sport of boxing approach us to implement our program, and take ownership for the integrity of their sport."

State athletic commissions set their own rules for drug testing, often limited to urine tests.

Three Weaknesses In Mayweather; Can Mosley or Pacquiao take advantage of them?

This past Saturday night, Manny Pacquiao exhibited through 12 rounds why he s considered to be the pound-for-pound best fighter in boxing. According to CompuBox punch statistics, he threw 1,231 punches and thoroughly dominated his opponent, Joshua Clottey, whose output was a meager 399. That being said, Clottey is a defensive-minded fighter, so when 1,231 punches were coming at him with blinding speed from unorthodox angles, he curled up into a shell like turtle. The fight lacked drama and many in boxing circles predicted that it would conclude that way. Regardless, Pacman fever rages on!

But that was not the bout fans wanted to see. Floyd Mayweather was supposed to be the one standing on the other side of the ring to lock horns with "The Pacman." Pacquiao's refusal to submit to the demands of Mayweather, regarding USDA blood-testing, has temporarily delayed the proposed mega-event. Make no mistake about it, the fight will happen, just has boxing genius Cus D'Amato presciently made the proclamation that 2 teenage fighters, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis, would one day meet again in the professional ranks. Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather will eventually face each other; it is destiny. The monetary gains that will be acquired by the parties involved will be astronomical to say the least. Pay-per-views buys will eclipse any record the sport has accomplished in the past.

When these 2 pugilistic dynamos finally do meet in the squared circle, what will be the outcome? Floyd is the undefeated one, and in my estimation, it will be more difficult for Manny to win over Floyd than Floyd over Manny. In very outing, Mayweather illustrates just how tactical, skilled, intelligent, accurate and versatile he is. In his last bout with Juan Manuel Marquez, it was a one-sided event. In fact, in many of his bouts, the skill set that he possesses, combined with his sheer athletic prowess, make him look virtually unstoppable. He is a magnificent and once in a lifetime talent to behold! However, no one is invincible. There are a few weaknesses in Mayweather's game that can be exploited if the Pacman is able to do it.

1. THE KANGAROO LEFT HOOK
Floyd has this move that he executes with amazing athleticism and speed. He leaps in with a left hook. Some have called it "The Kangaroo Left Hook." Floyd Patterson, Charlie Burley and other great fighters have incorporated this move in their arsenal. It takes exceptional speed and timing for it to be effective. Floyd does this in many of his fights. He nailed Juan Manuel Marquez with it time after time and actually knocked him down in the 2nd round with the same move. However. when he leaps in like this, he leaves himself wide open, but only for a split second. His right hand slightly drops and his chin is exposed. No one has been able to capitalize off of this because of the blinding speed in which Floyd executes it. If Manny is able to slep under Floyd's leaping left and counter it with a RIGHT hook of his own, he would be effective. Another approach forManny, which is the most difficult, is to TIME Floyd leaping in with one of his own shorter LEFT hooks. This might spell doom for Floyd. Watch the 2nd round of Marquez vs. Mayweather and slow-mo the knockdown; you will see exactly how Floyd leaves himself wide open for a well-timed shot.

2. FALLING BACK ONTO THE ROPES
Floyd has a habit of reverting backwards to the ropes. He is very comfortable when his opponent comes in. When they try to unload on him, Floyd, for the most part, shoulder rolls out of harm's way and effortlessly counters with right hands. Notwithstanding, some fighters have found success on landing on Floyd, for he puts himself in a position of vulnerability. His right glove is usually by his chin and when he pulls straight back, his left hand typically dangles by his waist. Many times, Oscar de la Hoya, Juan Manuel Marquez, Jose Luis Castillo, Ricky Hatton and even Emmanuel Augustus pinned Floyd up against the ropes and they landed more punches than Floyd avoided. With Manny's swarming offensive style, he would give Floyd hits. Against the ropes, FLoyd is vulnerable to body shots as well. The type of body shots that Manny delivered on Clottey were devastating. Pacquiao is very proficient going downstairs.

3. VERY ECONOMICAL PUNCH OUTPUT
According to CompuBox stats, Floyd's output average is around 40 punches per round, but with a 48% connect rate. That is an average of 480 punches in a 12 round fight. When Floyd is in this comfort zone, he is very relaxed and in his own rhythm and dictates to his opponents. The domination that he showed over the late warrior Diego Corrales was embarrissing to say the least. Floyd was fighting Floyd's fight at Floyd's pace. "Money May" has what I call "reflexive speed" and when he catches his opponents with it, they are stunned. His opponents tend to think twice about letting their hands go.

Manny's or Mosley's objective must be to make Mayweather fight at a different tempo. It will bring him out of his comfort zone. Zab Judah did this for the 1st half of their fight and even knocked Floyd down with a right hook in the 2nd. Mayweather's right hand touched the canvas, but referee Richard Steele missed the call. Zab was beating Floyd to the punch and was fighting at a tempo that Floyd came back and won. Manny has a tsunami like punching style. At times, he throws 8-punch combinations from the southpaw stance at very unorthodox angles. This will befuddle Floyd and could make him fight Manny's fight as Zab Judah did. Floyd will be taken out of his comfort zone.

In April of 2009, when Manny was training for Ricky Hatton, Freddie Roach told me personally at the Wildcard Boxing Gym, that Manny went 17 straight rounds with NO rest.That is 51 uninterrupted minutes of nonstop mitt work! Manny tends to get stronger as the fight continues and this endurance will enable him to outhustle Floyd in the later rounds. The trick will be getting Pacquiao's output to land. It will not be easy for Floyd is a MASTER of defensive wizardry.

Style make fights and this fight pits a veritable offensive machine against one of the greatest defensive counterpunchers the Sweet Science has ever known. Both fighters are great and this event will be the "Super Bowl" of boxing. Pacquiao will have to bring his 'A' game to beat Floyd Mayweather. Can he exploit the above weaknesses? It remains to be seen, but I can't wait to find out!

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Vs Sugar Shane Mosley: The War Begins to Heat Up

And so it begins – some much needed hype before a big fight.
On May 1st, you can bet that both Sugar Shane Mosley and Floyd “Money” Mayweather will be ready to exchange punches. Sorry, I mean to report that earlier as both Mosley and Mayweather had a bit of a scuffle in a press conference held in New York. There was definite shoving involved, a stare down, and later, as Mayweather quipped, “Our noses touched, but between two men, you know it’s all about the ladies … and then he grabbed my hands.”

So, it’s hype before the hype.

As my colleague Brian Wilbur stated in his Mailbag, boxing is currently going through a bit of a hiatus (until March 13th anyway). Boxing can use some drama now because of the whole superfight fiasco. But don’t get too excited here fight fans, I’m sure it’s going to be the first of many back and forth verbal barrages between the two fighters. I’ll be watching HBO’s acclaimed 24/7 series showcasing both training camps in anticipation (or hype) of the fight.

Sugar Shane Mosley, 46-5, 39 KO’s is one of my all-time favorite fighters. I always admired his strength, stamina, and speed. Mosley has a solid chin and has always shown up to fight – no excuses, no talking about how good he is. Mosley is just good, period. He has never taken time off from the sport of boxing and I always awaited the announcement of his next opponent. I rooted for him when he fought his battles against Oscar De La Hoya.

When Mosley is on, he is on and he fights like he wants to win every time.

But then there was the period of his fight career that had a shadow of doubt about where he was going in boxing. In 2002, Mosley suffered what seemed to be a string of losses against strong and worthy opponents. He lost twice against the late Vernon Forrest in 12 round unanimous decisions.

In 2004, he suffered the same record against Ronald “Winky” Wright. In the first bout against Wright, he lost in a 12 round unanimous decision followed up by a 12 round MD later in November. I thought he seemed to be on a straight path to retirement, but even with these losses, he never stopped challenging his ability. He continued to take fights against such talented fighters as Fernando Vargas and Luis Collazo. Mosley’s last loss came against Miguel Angel Cotto in 2007 via another 12 round unanimous decision.

In 2008, he fought against the volatile Ricardo Mayorga. But he handily defeated Mayorga with a 12th round KO. Mayorga, who is now on an MMA path, absolutely scared me because you just never knew what to expect from him as a fighter. Finally in 2009, he fought against Antonio Margarito for the WBA Super World Welterweight title and defeated him with a 9th round TKO.

It’s amazing to think that with such a string of notable victories and losses, Mosley is considered the underdog against Mayweather. But let’s move on to Mayweather.
For Floyd “Money” Mayweather, 40-0, 25 KO’s, there’s no mistaking Mayweather’s speed and defensive ability. His tight defensive stature reminds us of Sonny Liston and even Arthur Abraham. It’s a peek-a-boo, a guard the chin with your shoulder defense and it’s always worked for Mayweather. Mayweather moves in out with his speed and always connects in a flurry. Although 6 years younger than his opponent and perhaps rested from his retirement, Mayweather has always stayed in tremendous shape so his stamina has never been a problem. It’s going to be a fight of speed versus super speed.

Mayweather’s fights have gone through 10 rounds or more which is testimony to his stand and fight ability. Because of his strong defense, he hasn’t had to take a punch, but he will trade – in and out – and more than likely his opponent will feel the full extent of his punches. I actually get a little bored watching Mayweather because of his defense, but I don’t question its effectiveness.

It’s been criticized that Mayweather chose fighters that serve as perfect counters to his boxing ability, but much like Mosley, he didn’t exactly pick fighters that didn’t have a bit of punching power to them. I was rooting for Juan Manuel Marquez because he isn’t a weak fighter by any means.

If you look at Mayweather on paper, he smartly chose a fighting schedule that was never more than 2 to 3 fights a year, and by his own admission, in his retirement, he never stopped training in the gym. But, it’s also no mistake that his fights have gone on for 10 rounds or longer, he also hasn’t been knocking them out with a KO punch either (Boxrec.com shows Mosley with a KO stat at 75% versus 62.5% for Mayweather). His last TKO came against Hatton in the 10th round – back in 2007. There will be no KO in this fight. It will go 12 rounds by split decision.

I love the underdog and in this case, Mosley is the underdog. But I expect a good fight from both fighters. Mosley is the perfect foil for Mayweather because they can evenly match and exchange on speed and power. Both fighters are going to be dragged down to a degree as the fight may be dubbed as the fight that happened because another fight didn’t happen.

As both Mosley and Mayweather represent the best of the welterweight division, it’s going to be a battle – one that both fighters may come away as the rightful and well deserved opponent for any bout with Manny Pacquiao.

Boxing World Is Disrespecting Mosley

Sugar Shane Mosley recently sent out a memo to the press about the basic disrespect he’s been shown by one and all in the boxing world.

He has a point.

Not to disparage the great Manny Pacquiao on his easy victory, he did take some shots. And not to denigrate the career and talent of Floyd Mayweather, he is undefeated. But how can anyone think Mayweather is a cinch to beat Mosley on May 1, in Las Vegas?

The one-sided thinking of promoters, trainers, television analysts, fans and even Pacquiao himself mouthing their wishes for a Mayweather fight is downright short-sighted. Does everyone truly think Money Mayweather is that much better than Mosley?

Only the blind and easily fooled thought Clottey had a slim chance of beating the speedy Pacquiao. The Filipino fired combinations at will and Clottey covered up like a Midwestern family in a basement during a storm of twisters. That won’t happen when Mosley fights Mayweather.

“Most people think I’m just a strong puncher and a brawler,” said Mosley, 38, who is the WBA welterweight titleholder since knocking out Antonio Margarito a year ago in Los Angeles. “People forget I’m a master boxer too.”

Many believe that Mayweather’s defensive boxing prowess and athletic ability will be too much for Mosley to overcome. Odds makers tab the undefeated Mayweather a 4-1 favorite.

“There are five ways to beat Shane Mosley,” said Mayweather, 33, alluding to Mosley’s five career losses. “He could have fought me 10 years ago and had a chance.”

Odds don’t always tell the real story.

Undefeated fighters aren’t necessarily indicative of perfection or invulnerability. History’s best recognized prizefighters all have losses. From Sugar Ray Robinson to Jack Dempsey to Willie Pep and Muhammad Ali, all are considered among the greatest prizefighters the world has ever seen. All sustained losses.

“If you don’t have a loss it means you just haven’t fought everybody,” said trainer Roger Mayweather himself two years ago. “In the old days everybody fought everybody.”

When Ali fought Foreman he was a huge underdog. Some had Foreman a 12-1 favorite after he easily demolished Joe Frazier and Ken Norton who both gave Ali fits when they met. But in 1974, it was Ali who found the antidote for Foreman’s seemingly invincibility. Ali won by knockout in the eighth.

Need another example?

Let’s go to the lower weight classes. Back in 1951, the great Sugar Ray Robinson traveled to London, England to defend his middleweight world championship against little known Randy Turpin. Robinson (128-1-2) hadn’t lost a fight in eight years and was thought to be a cinch after 88 fights without a loss. Turpin (42-2) had a great record but was thought to be out of his depth against the God-like powers of Robinson. That night Turpin’s unorthodox style confused and bewildered Robinson who sailed back home without the world title belt. A return match two months later saw Robinson knock out Turpin in New York City, but he still had problems with the British boxer.

Boxing is not a simple matter of who is faster or who is stronger. Nor is it about who is more experienced or younger.

“It comes down to who has the better skills,” said Mosley, adding that speed and power are not skills but God-given.

The euphoria of Pacquiao’s victory combined with the missed opportunity to fight Mayweather due to his demands for a blood test may have blinded all sides to the truth about the big showdown between Mosley and Mayweather.

It’s not going to be easy for either fighter.

“If you know me then you know I always get up for big fights,” Mosley said. “That’s what motivates me.”

Pacquiao vs Clottey Overshadowed by Mayweather vs Mosley?

It was perhaps a bit ironic that on Wednesday the media day for Manny Pacquiao took place at the Wild Card Boxing Club, followed by the Mayweather-Mosley press conference at LA Live on Thursday. Just my two cents, but judging by the buzz, I think the fight that takes place on May 1st is overshadowing the fight that takes palce next week at Cowboys Stadium.

I think the move to make the Mayweather-Mosley events open to the public was a very smart move. And let’s face, while Pacquiao-Clottey is a good fight, it isn’t the match-up on paper that Mayweather-Mosley is.

But I don’t know if Bob Arum is even worried about any of this, next week, the stage is theirs. But I’m hearing that they couldn’t do all of the promotional stuff that they had planned on doing in Dallas because Manny isn’t arriving soon enough to make it all work. But still, if they can get 45,000 fans in that building, it’s certainly a success.

But judging by what I’ve seen and heard, I think Mayweather-Mosley does signficantly more pay-per-view buys.

-Told by a good source that a fight between lightweights Brandon Rios and Urbano Antillon is being discussed by Top Rank. That would be an all-action, crossroads bout.

- I was on a radio show in Las Vegas, and I was asked about James Toney’s foray with the UFC and I was asked what he could expect. My answer- much smaller paydays as he works for Dana White.

- The bout between Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron is very close to being finalized. But I’m told that all of the expected East Coast venues are booked. So there’s a very good chance that fight comes out west.( March 4th, 3:54, pm, Pacific).

Mosley vows better bout vs Mayweather

Shane Mosley, the World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight super champion, said his May 1 fight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will surely be a showdown unlike the one-sided fight of Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey last Saturday.

“I would like to congratulate Manny on his victory Saturday night even though I think it put most of the fans watching to sleep,” Mosley said in a 411mania article posted by Ramon Aranda.

Pacquiao successfully defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight belt against Clottey via unanimous decision last Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Mosley, who will face Mayweather at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, even declared that he will score a knockout against his opponent.

“Now it's time for the world to focus on May 1 when I promise you nobody will be sleeping except for Floyd after I knock him out and send him back into retirement,” added Mosley.

Pacquiao was supposed to fight Mayweather but negotiations collapsed after they disagreed on the Olympic-style drug testing protocol which Mayweather called for.

Mosley, meanwhile, was slated to face Andre Berto last January. Berto, however, pulled out of the fight because his family members in Haiti were affected by the massive January 12 earthquake.

No comment from Mayweather

Talks of the much-awaited yet botched Pacquiao-Mayweather bout gained ground again after the Filipino boxing icon’s latest victory.

“‘Yun naman ang gusto ko (That’s what I want),” Pacquiao told Abac Cordero of The Philippine Star. “It’s up to him. I have no problem fighting him. But I don’t think he’s ready now.”

Pacquiao’s adviser, Wakee Salud, for his part, said: “I think the fight will happen. It has to happen… “I think it (Pacquiao-Mayweather) will happen this year.”

The undefeated Mayweather, however, has not yet commented on the Pacquiao-Clottey bout.

According to BoxingScene, a Team Mayweather member said: “Floyd did not do any interviews. Floyd has not watched the fight yet.”

This was in response to an alleged interview wherein Mayweather purportedly said that Pacquiao was a one-dimensional fighter. Such interview was deemed “100% fabricated.”

Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, meantime, told BoxingScene that he does not believe Mayweather did not watch the Pacquiao-Clottey “The Event” clash.

Mayweather, Clottey worlds apart

It was Mayweather’s uncle, Jeff, who gave remarks on the Pacquiao-Clottey bout.

He told Percy Crawford of FightHype that Pacquiao gave a decent performance but the fight was “very boring and very one-sided.”

“You can't really look spectacular if a guy isn't taking chances or taking any risk to try to win the fight. You had one man working and one man working to survive. With that being the case, it didn't even give Manny the chance to actually look good because there were very few exchanges where both guys were trying to hit each other simultaneously,” he continued.

Jeff then addressed the comparisons being made between Clottey and Mayweather, who are known to be defensive fighters.

He even said the comparisons are “asinine.”

“You're talking about one guy who is a pure boxer, and the purest boxer in the history of the sport, that can actually hit you and not be hit and be right in your face at the same time. And then you got one guy that lies on the ropes and allows you to beat on him. That's the difference is that one is a boxer and one is a sitting duck,” he noted.

Jeff elaborated on his nephew’s boxing style, pointing out that Floyd is not just all about defense because he is a mobile fighter.

“Floyd's defense is why he's moving and while he's actually throwing punches. He will make you miss while he's in the heat of the battle. Floyd makes you miss and makes you pay. Clottey doesn't make you miss. He allows you to hit him on the elbows and hit him on the arms and that's not really defense.”

The Mayweather-Mosley fight is sucking the air out of Pacquiao-Clottey

After only one press conference, the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Shane Mosley news has pretty much taken all the air out of the upcoming March 13th fight between World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey. You can make an argument that both Mosley and Mayweather are better speakers, better at the promotional side of things, but whatever the case, the Mayweather-Mosley fight appears to be shoving news about the Clottey vs. Pacquiao fight off the front page.

But it’s really not that surprising. The Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight appears to be a terrible mismatch even if you twist things around and give Clottey credit for almost beating Miguel Cotto in his last fight. Almost doesn’t cut it, and I’m not one of those writers who thinks that Clottey should have been given the decision over Cotto when they met last year in June.

Clottey lost that fight. He got tired around the 10th and basically gave the fight away. He’s a good fighter, but I don’t see him as a top number #1 contender no matter what the WBO thinks. The Mayweather-Mosley fight appears to be just all around much better fight. That’s not Pacquiao’s fault. He just fights the guys that his promoter puts in front of him.

I suppose Pacquiao could have stood up and asked for someone different like Andre Berto, Shane Mosley, but Clottey is what we he’s stuck with. However, it’s sad to see the Mayweather vs. Mosley fight getting talked about more than the Pacquiao-Clottey fight, because the Mayweather fight isn’t taking place until May 1st, while the Clottey vs. Pacquiao fight is happening in less than two weeks. That’s not a good sign at all. I think they may have misjudged the interest in this fight.

What I don’t see happening for this fight is the promotion of it. Where’s the advertising? I don’t see any advertisements on HBO, nothing in the newspapers, no commercials, nothing. It’s like the fight isn’t even happening. When I ask casual fans about the Pacquiao-Clottey fight, none of them have even heard about it. That tells me that Top Rank, who is promoting both Pacquiao and Clottey, isn’t putting money into this fight for some reason.

Why are they holding back on the advertising? Is it that they’re seeing this as a pure profit fight because of the diehard Pacquiao fans who will purchase this fight on pay per view regardless of whether Pacquiao fights someone good or not? The fight supposedly is close to selling out the Dallas Cowboy stadium, with nearly 45, 000 tickets purchased.

You would think with that money, they could turn around and put it into advertising to make this fight a bigger success. Of course, I don’t know that any amount of advertising will be able to make Clottey a gem of an opponent. He’s perhaps too flawed to paint him as a knockout artist or as some kind of unbeatable fighter. He’s been beaten already three times and is coming off a loss in his last fight. You’d have to gloss over those little nasty facts to try and build him up as a good opponent for Pacquiao

Mosley would be just as dangerous for Pacquiao as Mayweather

When Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather square up on May 1st, I am pretty sure that Floyd will be the one who comes out on top. I think that Floyd’s defence and movement will stop Mosley from landing too much and his slick counter punching will get him the decision. However, I do think that against Manny Pacquiao, Shane would be just as dangerous.

We saw from the Clottey fight that Pacquiao can be hit by relatively slow fighters, Mosley is very quick and also powerful. Pacquiao can obviously dish out major punishment of his own and has shown that he takes a good punch too but if Mosley landed consistently on Pacquiao then he could bust him up and maybe stop him. Of course, if somebody attacks Pacquiao then they are at risk of getting themselves knocked out but Mosley has been facing bigger fighters than Pacquiao for years and could surely take some leather.

I think that Mosley would have to go out hard early in a do-or-die situation because as a big, powerful welterweight, he would have a good chance of stopping Pacquiao. Pacquiao would of course have a chance of hurting Mosley badly during the exchanges because of his speed and power. We will have to see what Mosley’s inactivity has taken out of him when he fights Mayweather.

Mosley would be 39 if he fought Pacquiao which is very old for a fast fighter but I do still think that he would have a chance. If Mosley just laid back and tried to box then Pacquiao would likely use his great stamina and youth to outwork Mosley over the course of the fight. I think Mosley’s best shot would be to hurt Pacquiao early by going after him and busting him up but he would probably not do that because of the risk attached.

The threat that Mayweather poses to Pacquiao is that he has brilliant defence and is a good counter puncher, something which Manny struggles with, however, we have seen that Mayweather can struggle with pressure and would likely be scared to exchange with Pacquiao because of Pacquiao’s speed and power. I think that Floyd could maybe fight too nervous a fight and end up losing a decision, or he may fight the fight of his career and outbox Pacquiao.

One thing I am certain on is that Mayweather is not going to stop Pacquiao, to do that he would have to eat too many punches and would maybe get stopped himself. This fight could go either way, constant pressure from Pacquiao resulting in a decision for him or Mayweather’s skill and defence resulting in a decision for him.

Both of these fights are winnable and losable for Manny but if he lost to Mosley it would be more likely by knockout or stoppage and it could destroy his legacy but if he was beaten by Floyd then it would be by a decision and he would admit being beaten by the better boxer on the night.

Pacquiao could win both of these fights, however, his speed, angles and power make him a hard fight for anybody and it would be likely that both fighters would get caught with a good few shots from Manny who could use his great fitness and offence to wear them down. One thing is for sure and that is that all three of these fighters are greats and no matter who wins in their fights, they will always be greats.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Shane Mosley is already tired of Floyd Mayweather's pre-fight antics and will knock him out when the two meet in May, the boxer said Wednesday.

The two American fighters scuffled on their opening day of their press tour in New York and 24 hours later at the Lincoln Theater in Washington went nose-to-nose jawing at each other.

"I'm a mild-mannered guy. People must understand I'm a gentleman when the other person has been a gentleman as well," Mosley told reporters. "If he wants to get feisty, that's OK.

"His personality is to fight before the fight. Since I'm older I understand this. He can't do the same thing he's done to other fighters because I know his tactics.

"He's not in my head, no. I've waited for this fight for too long."

Whether or not the pre-fight clash was merely boxing theater, it is clear Mosley does not care for Mayweather, who has been hurling insults this week as quickly as his jab.

"I'm just happy this fight is taking place," said Mosley. "He can say what he wants to say, he can do what he wants to do. It doesn't matter to me.

"I just want him to show up in the ring. There's nothing he can say to me that would make me mad. I just want to see him on May 1 and we can settle it with our fists."

The Mayweather-Mosley fight at the Las Vegas MGM Grand was signed only after the mega-fight between Mayweather and WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao collapsed.

Mosley (46-5, 39 knockouts) bristles at the idea that he was an afterthought, having long sought a fight against either Mayweather or Pacquiao.

"I was waiting for a year to fight either one of these guys," the WBA welterweight champion said softly. "Did they care if I was going to wait? No. But it's the fans who are going to benefit from this fight."

"I don't play. I give 100 percent. I'm going to give everything that I have. Mayweather knows that."

The 38-year-old Mosley was nattily attired in a charcoal gray suit, with a light-green shirt and a green floral tie. He glanced at Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs), who was casually dressed in a sweat suit.

Mayweather, 33, laughed with fans, signed autographs and posed for pictures. Each signature was accompanied with an insult lobbed toward Mosley.

Mosley shrugged and said: "I'm going to knock him out. I can't wait to get into the ring and dig my teeth into Mayweather. It's going to be the fight of the decade."

Fight to be held May 1 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas

NEW YORK (AP) - Music blared over the loudspeakers, smoke billowed across the stage, and the curtain dropped to reveal Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shane Mosley dressed to the nines as a crowd of several thousand inside the Nokia Theater let out a roar.

They won't meet in the ring until May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but the first stop on a whirlwind, three-city publicity tour Tuesday included plenty of pomp and pizazz.

Fireworks, too.

After lengthy introductions that would have made silver-tongued Michael Buffer blush, the unbeaten Mayweather and the welterweight champion Mosley sauntered to the middle of the stage and stood face to face. Jawing turned to pointing, pointing turned to shoving, and before long, promoters from both camps were rushing forward to separate them.

Perhaps the altercation was staged, but it's hard to fake the animosity between them.

"The thing is this: He may be the champ, but we all know belts don't do nothing but collect dust," Mayweather said, smiling. "I'm in the check-cashing business, baby."

Both should be able to cash hefty checks after this fight, arguably the biggest in the sport not involving Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather and Mosley have been circling each other for years, and the possibility they would finally meet really gained traction when Mosley crashed a post-fight interview after Mayweather defeated Juan Manuel Marquez last September.

Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions brazenly predicted the fight will do 3 million pay-per-views, which would shatter the record set by Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.

"We have the two best American fighters of our generation," Schaefer said. "Mayweather has become a household name, let's face it. Love him or hate him, he's a household name. And with Shane Mosley, you have the perfect dance partner."

The fight came together after weeks of negotiations between Mayweather and Pacquiao failed to produce an agreement. The Filipino fighter refused Olympic-style drug testing — Mayweather's camp has accused Pacquiao of using performance-enhancing drugs — and he will instead fight Joshua Clottey on March 13 at Cowboys Stadium.

When potentially the richest fight in boxing history fell through, Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) turned to the next biggest attraction in the loaded 147-pound division.

Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs) was supposed to face Andre Berto in a unification fight in January, but Berto's family was severely impacted by the earthquake in Haiti, forcing him to back out.

"It's been a long time since I got a chance to show the world that I'm the best fighter, and that's all that I really want, to be the best," Mosley said. "I'm going to take my hat off to Mayweather, because I didn't think I was ever going to get a fight from any of these top fighters. He said, 'Yeah man, I'll take that challenge. I'll fight you.'"

Both fighters will undergo random blood testing, which they claim will set a new standard for safety in boxing. Such an agreement perked some eyebrows considering Mosley has acknowledged unintentionally using steroids before defeating De La Hoya in 2003.

Mosley claims it was a mistake made by a strength coach connected to the BALCO lab, and insisted again Tuesday that he lives a clean life — even before Mayweather dredged up the past.

"I can't say how many fights Shane has won in the past because we know Shane was using enhancement drugs. That's something we do know," Mayweather said. "It's no different than Pacquiao. I offered Pacquiao the fight. I said, 'We'll give you $25 million.' I never met a man who wouldn't take a $25 million drug test."

While it's hard to forget about the failed fight with Pacquiao, there are plenty of signs that the best alternative is quickly gaining mainstream attention.

Schaefer said the sponsorship portfolio already includes AT&T and StubHub, and that about 14,000 tickets were snatched up Tuesday in the first 15 minutes they were on sale. HBO is also planning the eighth installment of its Emmy-winning "24/7" series during the weeks leading up to the fight, offering behind-the-scenes access to each fighter's training camp.

Then there's the publicity tour, which moves to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday before wrapping up Thursday in Los Angeles.

"This fight reminds me of back in the days of Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns, the fights we saw back in the day, the classic fights that brought boxing back," said De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions, which counts Mosley as a partner.

De La Hoya wasn't shy about a prediction, either.

"I've fought both fighters and I already know what's going to happen," he said, invoking Mayweather's former "Pretty Boy" nickname. "I already know there's going to be a knockout, I already know, and it ain't going to be 'pretty.'"

As if 12 rounds of world championship boxing were not enough for one night's work, Manny Pacquaio bounced out to another stadium across the road to give a late night concert for thousands of his fans.

The first song of his 90 minute session was a rousing rendition of La Bamba.

This little chap is possessed of more energy than it takes to power up the space station of an arena in which he retained his world welterweight title against a challenger who dwarfed him in the ring.

The sound and light show was dazzling but no star shone bigger or brighter in the Texas sky this Saturday night the most brilliant boxer on planet Earth.

The high-tec wizardry which surged across the largest HD screens in the world created a spectacle in its own right but nothing could equal the velocity of Pacquaio.

The Pacman was a blur, a meteor hurtling through the vastness of the Dallas Cowboys Stadum as he continued his journey from the slums of the Philippines to a place in the galaxy of sporting greatness.

There is no word yet as to how Floyd Mayweather Jr viewed his arch-rival's performance but if the idea was to lure back into negotiations the American who kicked up the stink about drugs testing which forced the cancellation of their mega-fight, it may have done exactly the opposite.

The perceived wisdom has been that Mayweather's size and defensive skills would make him impregnable against any smaller fighter, no matter how gifted. That theory was thrown into question here as Pacquaio won almost every round against Joshua Clottey, an iron-man of a former champion who weighed two divisions heavier than himself by the time they entered the ring and who boxed behind a defensive wall of arms and gloves.

Promoter Bob Arum accuses Mayweather of manufacturing the blood-testing scandal to avoid fighting his Pacman. If so, Floyd Jr may be more reluctant now to come back to the party in November.

If that fight were to take place here it would become not only the first $200 million promotion but would more than double Saturday's crowd of 50,994, which of itself raised the bar for boxing attendances in the future.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would relish the opportunity - saying 'such an event would be very good for boxing' - even though Clottey's unwillingness to co-operate in a thriller left Pacquaio to put on a virtual one-man show.

As the Ghanian who came to America via east London played peek-a-boo Pacquaio piled up the points by throwing a phenomenal 1,231 punches, most of them in clusters at light speed, many of them to the body.

He kept firing, even though that left him exposed to Clottey's occasional counters.

Sporadic, Clottey's responses may have been but when he did connect he did so with sufficient force to prove that Pacquaio is equipped with another of the components of ring greatness. In common with Muhammad Ali, he has a granite jaw.

ARLINGTON, TEXAS—His mission accomplished, Manny Pacquiao is now calling out on Floyd Mayweather Jr. to do his part against Shane Mosley so that their aborted megabuck showdown can push through.

Pacquiao came out firing on all cylinders to trounce Joshua Clottey by unanimous decision Saturday night and keep his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown before a packed Cowboys Stadium here.

Now, Mayweather has to get past fellow American Mosley in their battle for the World Boxing Association welterweight crown on May 1.

“I want that fight,” said Pacquiao, to the roar of the 50,944 crowd that trooped to the $1.2-billion facility. “The people want that fight.”

It was the third biggest attendance in modern-day boxing, surpassed only by the 72,000 that watched the Muhammad Ali-Leon Spinks bout at the Superdome and the 60,000 that witnessed the Julio Cesar Chavez-Pernell Whitaker tiff at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Pacquiao, named Fighter of the Decade by practically every boxing group all over the world, added it was up to Mayweather to accept the challenge that would settle the score on who’s the greatest fighter of his generation. The seven-time, seven-division champion Pacquiao and the unbeaten Mayweather are both claimants of the pound-for-pound throne.

“It’s up to him (Mayweather),” said Pacquiao. “To us there’s no problem. We’re ready to fight anytime. Maybe he’s not ready to fight yet. Maybe some other time.”

Pacquiao, however, hinted that he would not wait forever as there are other opponents being lined up by his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank like former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito. There’s also Mosley, who has been dying for a shot at Pacquiao.

“He should win against Mosley,” said Pacquiao. “If not, Mosley and I will fight.”

Later, during the post-fight press conference, Pacquiao reiterated his desire to fight Mayweather, who was supposed to be his foe Saturday but was substituted by Clottey when negotiations fell apart due to Mayweather’s demand for Olympic-style random drug testing.

Wearing dark sunglasses to cover a lump on his right cheek, Pacquiao said he doesn’t think Mayweather (40-0) is impregnable.

“I think his style is not difficult. It’s not difficult to study,” said Pacquiao, who analyzes an opponent’s style with chief trainer Freddie Roach.

If Pacquiao-Mayweather pushes through, it is projected to be the biggest ever in the sport, with both fighters assured of a payday of $30 million upwards.

The welterweight title match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shane Mosley is going to test the conventions of modern boxing.

There are some promoters who believe that a match between two African-American boxers can't generate record-breaking numbers on Pay-Per-View. And there are those who believe that having pro boxers submit to Olympic-style testing for performance-enhancing drugs before a fight is fraught with problems.

Mayweather and Mosley were at the Nokia Theater in Times Square Tuesday to promote their mega match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 1. After some pushing, shoving and hand-fighting during a staged stand-up on a fog-shrouded stage, they seem ready to turn convention on its head. If this fight is as successful as the promoters and TV executives believe it will be, it will go a long way toward determining what the future holds for the sport in the U.S.

And for a sport that continues to fall deeper into the niche realm, moving forward is very important. Nothing will move it out of that realm faster than a strong product in the ring. That means it must be a meaningful match between two highly skilled, equal competitors. And that is what Mayweather-Mosley is.

This match is the residue from Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao going up in flames. Only in boxing can the biggest bout in 25 years disintegrate, leaving mainstream sports fans scratching their heads, and a resulting match being arguably more competitive than the one that blew up. But that is what has happened.

Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) and Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs) are in the top three pound-for-pound on almost everyone's list. They have been circling each other for 10 years, since they were both lightweights. And Mosley is probably the only boxer, Pacquiao included, who can give Mayweather all he can handle. Therein lies the intrigue and why the conventional thinking about a pair of African-Americans not doing well at the box office will get turned upside down.

Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, announced that within the first 15 minutes of a sale at the MGM Grand box office in Las Vegas Tuesday morning that 14,000 of the 17,000 tickets had been sold. He also thinks that it will set a record for Pay-Per-View sales. "This will be a case where one plus one equals three," Schaefer said. "Three million homes is what I anticipate. We will break records."

Mark Taffet, head of HBO Pay-Per-View, also believes Mayweather-Mosley will top the record of 2.4 million buys that was set with Mayweather-Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. "This could be the biggest fight in Pay-Per-View history," Taffet said. "Floyd Mayweather is the driving force behind the resurgence of boxing in the urban community."

Mayweather is a polarizing force in boxing. But in the African-American community he is popular because of his hip-hop swagger and ring dominance. He calls himself "Money." That braggadocio turns off many, but plays well among young urban fans.

Mayweather's Pay-Per-View numbers have been the strongest in the sport since 2007. Taffet said Mayweather has been involved in fights that have done 5.5 million buys and generated $290 million in revenue. Mosley doesn't have nearly the profile of Mayweather, but he may be his closest equal in the ring - a fast, quick boxer with power in both hands and a good chin.

While Pacquiao refused to acquiesce to Mayweather's demands for Olympic-style drug testing, which included random blood tests, Mosley has agreed to it.

"I've never seen anybody who didn't want to take a $25 million blood test," Mayweather quipped about Pacquiao's refusal.

Mosley has admitted before a federal grand jury that he took the designer steroids "the clear" and "the cream" and used EPO. Mayweather and Mosley have both agreed to Olympic-style random testing for the fight.

"I believe we have a chance to move the sport forward by agreeing to take drug tests," Mosley said. "It's important that everybody knows that both fighters are clean and the fight is being fought on a level playing field."

If both Mayweather and Mosley test clean and the fight does an astronomical Pay-Per-View number, then the sport will definitely take a giant step forward.

Lost in the chaos of a scripted physical encounter between Mayweather and Mosley, was the comments that Mayweather made comparing Shane Mosley’s use of steroids to Manny’s alleged use of PEDs. Mayweather said the two were no different. Let’s examine further.

"I can't say how many fights Shane has won in the past because we know Shane was using enhancement drugs. That's something we do know," Mayweather said. "It's no different than Pacquiao. If this isn’t a pure testament to how much Floyd has “Manny on the Mind” then I don’t know what is. He’s doing a press conference for his fight with Shane Mosley and he still has to take a shot at PacMan.

To say that Mosley’s confirmed steroid use is the same as a falsely accused Pacquiao is insane. I wish reporters would grow a spine and immediately reply to Mayweather by saying “Pacquiao has never tested positive for anything”

Today in New York's Times Square the fighting pride of Lynwood, California, Shane Mosley, kicked-off a media tour for his May 1st boxing match with pound for pound great Floyd Mayweather Junior.

Their press conference got testy when Mayweather and Mosley exchanged in the customary pre-planned shoving match before being separated by the event's organizers.

Sugar and Money may electrify fans in Las Vegas on May Day, but the most interesting personality surrounding the contest will not be lacing up the red leather come fight night.

This personality does not belong to promoter Richard Schaefer, or Golden Boy Promotion's living logo Oscar De La Hoya, nor Mayweather's world-class assistant Leonard Elerbe.

The Michigan motor mouth, Floyd's trainer and uncle, Roger Mayweather will take center stage when it comes to talking up the bout as the weeks tick away and the combatants settle into the daily grind of preparing for a world-class fight.

This past Sunday, broadcast from Los Angeles, The Boxing Truth Radio had the opportunity to catch up with one of boxing's true characters. Floyd Mayweather-Shane Mosley Tickets on Sale Tuesday

Tickets for the May 1 mega fight between 32-year-old Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 knockouts) and 38-year-old WBA welterweight (147 pounds) super world champion, Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs), at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, will go on sale at 10 a.m. West Coast Time, and, 1 p.m., East Coast Time on Tuesday, March 2, according to a release from Golden Boy Promotions.

The first day of ticket sales coincides with the first day of a three-day press tour scheduled to begin in New York, and then travel to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, and to end in Los Angeles, on Thursday.

Prices for the fight range from $150, $300, $600, $1,000, and, $1,250, and are limited to 10 per individual, and, the $150 tickets are limited to two per person as part of that 10-ticket limit. One of the stipulations of the bout agreement was an immediate rematch for Mayweather, as well as the fact that both combatants will be subjected to Olympic-style, randomly blood, and, urinalysis testing.

But fans, nationwide, won't have to wait until May to get what could be perhaps an up-close and personal view of the two future Hall Of Famers, who might just be coming to a theater near you.

Mosley-Mayweather second best to Pacquiao-Floyd

MANILA, Philippines -- For veteran boxing writer Dan Rafael, the reported match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Shane Mosley is only second best to a fight fan’s dream match between 7-time world champion Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Jr.

“As much as I like Mosley-Mayweather… It's still second best. Pacquiao-Mayweather was, and still is, the biggest fight out there,” said Rafael, ESPN.com’s boxing writer, in his blog.

Rafael said that for him, the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight remains the biggest draw.

Talks between the camps of two of the most recognizable figures in boxing had collapsed over drug-testing procedures.

“If you ask me, there are three superfights in boxing. One is Pacquiao-Mayweather, which is by far the biggest. The other two are Mosley-Mayweather and Pacquiao-Mosley,” said Rafael.

Shortly after Pacquiao decided to face Clottey, reports came out that Golden Boy Promotions was working out a match between Mayweather and Mosley.

“Let's just hope the sides can make it happen (probably for early May) and not get bogged down in the ego and stupidity that killed Mayweather's fight with Manny Pacquiao, which was supposed to be on March 13,” he said.

Pacquiao, Clottey head to NY

Pacquiao and Clottey, meanwhile, kicked off the promotion of their fight dubbed “The Event” at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.

The 7-time world champion will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) title against the Ghanaian, a former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion.

“Clottey, he's a good fighter and a top fighter and he's bigger than me so I have to prepare hard for this fight,” said Pacquiao.

Clottey, for his part, said he is aware that he will be facing a very tough opponent in the “People’s Champ.”

“This is going to be a hell of a fight… I love Manny Pacquiao. If you throw (punches) at him, he will throw back at you. I know what I'm going to face,” Clottey said in an AFP report.

The “The Event” headliners will proceed to New York for another press conference at Madison Square Garden.

Pacquiao will then start his training camp at Wildcard Gym in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California after his promotional commitments.

Is facing Mosley enough to silence Mayweather's critics?

Floyd Mayweather Jr faces more criticism than perhaps any other fighter alive today, and in some cases with good reason.

Many fans don't believe Mayweater carries himself the way one of the best fighters in the world should. There are the issues of the Xylocaine, the extra testing fiasco with Pacquiao and the lack of decent competitionm over the last few years when better opponents were available.

Perhaps because he was once the top pound for pound fighter in the world, or perhaps because he has shied away from testing himself over the last few years, Mayweather is the most hated man in boxing today. If anything though this should be somewhat flattering to Mayweather, in that he's held up to a higher standard than any other fighter as well, because he was once at the top, people expect a certain kind of behavior from him.

His latest fight against Shane Mosley, a perfectly respected welterweight champion, was supposed to rebuild a lot of the respect and admiration that many of the fans lost over the last few years that Mayweather was coasting. Mosley is probably the number 3 welterweight in the world behind Pacquiao and Mayweather himself, and he's certainly a better fighter than the plodding Joshua Clottey that Pacquiao faces next month.

The big question then is whether Mosley alone is enough to return Mayweather to the top of the welterweight rankings and make up for his perceived lack of effort of late. As usual there were quite a mixed bag from the fans I spoke to and who contacted me about this one:

Scott Holst, Pittsburgh PA:"When Mayweather wins this he's back at the top of the rankings. Marquez is better than Clottey and Mosley is better than Cotto, so this win puts him above Pacquiao"

Bill Brandyke, Columbus Ohio: "There's nothing Mayweather can do to get back up on top other than fight Pacquiao. Even if you argue Mosley is better than Cotto you're still left with tiny Tim Marquez against Clottey, which puts the recent records of both in Pacquiao's favor"

Its difficult to try to compare Marquez and Mosley to Clottey and Cotto. While some would no doubt remind me that Cotto beat Mosley, at the same time there is the missing third man Antonio Margarito, who levels out both fighters. Clottey and Marquez are harder to compare because while Clottey is a bigger and higher ranked fighter, I think Pacquiao would struggle more with Marquez again than he will with Clottey. He'd beat them both easily, but just stylistically Marquez is still the tougher fight.

Robert White, Philadelphia PA: "Mayweather didn't even want to fight Mosley, he just had no other choice and now hes stuck"

Regardless though Robert, he's still taking the fight, and he could have fought someone a lot easier than Mosley is he really wanted to. He might have preferred an easier opponent, but most still think he will beat Mosley, he might just have a harder time doing it than he would have against someone lesser.

Freddie Maynard, Pittsburgh PA: "Mayweather is a great fighter, he just isn't motivated enough to prove it all the time. He will still dance rings around that little midget Pacquiao later this year though, then everyone will start believing in him again"

Mosley not afraid to fight Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines – “Sugar” Shane Mosley of the United States said he is ready to take on 7-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, unlike his May 1 opponent, American Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

In an interview with Anthony “Duljoman” Andales of PhilBoxing.com, Mosley reacted to speculations that the Pacquiao-Mayweather bout was cancelled because the American was afraid to suffer his first loss at the hands of the pound-for-pound king.

“I don’t know if he’s a coward or not but what I know for this fight? He was forced to fight me. Aside from Manny, this is the only big money for him out there. If he’s afraid to fight Manny I’m not,” he said.

Mosley went on to say that he is aiming to defeat Mayweather so he could challenge the Filipino boxing sensation.

“Beating him [Mayweather] will put me to where I wanna be placed in my career. That’s why, I’ll beat Floyd, then hopefully Manny will fight me.”

The Americans will slug it out on May 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, the venue of the botched Pacquiao-Mayweather bout.

Pacquiao will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight belt against Ghanaian Joshua Clottey on his supposed fight date with Mayweather, March 13. The clash will take place at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Pacquiao-Mayweather negotiations crumbled when the fighters’ camps disagreed on the blood testing procedure.

Focused on fight

Mosley, the World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight super champion, added that he thinks Mayweather is fighting him for the money alone.

“Mayweather needs money that’s why he’s forced to fight me. He needs money that’s why he puts a rematch clause on this one.” He stressed that he does not need a rematch clause.

The undefeated American, who is also called “Money,” said the same thing about Mosley.

“I just think that Shane Mosley, he’s desperate, so he has no choice but to fight me. His career’s coming to an end and, before he goes, he wants that last big payday,” he told David Mayo of The Grand Rapids Press.

Meanwhile, Mosley also commented that he does not care if Mayweather talks about his personal matters.

“He can say anything about my divorce, he can think all day about my divorce. I’m cool with that. He can focus about my divorce… When I have an upcoming fight, I’m only thinking about that fight. I don’t care about my opponent's mouth. I’ll deal with them inside the ring. So I don’t care at all.”

“I don’t care about him and I don’t care about his personality. This is business for me, nothing personal. My mind is focused to beat him and fight him again because we have a rematch clause for this one,” he added.

Mayweather to Dictate Drug Testing Terms For Mosley Fight

Now that the contracts for the May 1 Mayweather vs Mosley welterweight boxing match have been signed, SecondsOut can reveal a stunning component of their agreement. In signing off on the deal, Mosley has given Mayweather complete control over the drug testing to be implemented, apart from any testing that is required by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. A source who was involved in the contract negotiations for the fight told SecondsOut on Friday, “Shane has signed a contract that says Floyd can dictate the terms of the drug testing. Anything that Floyd wants is all right, as long as Floyd submits to the same testing requirements as Shane. There is no provision one way or another in the contract for public disclosure of the test results, although I would think that the parties would be bound to report a positive test result to the Nevada commission.”

In other words, Floyd Mayweather Jr has now supplanted the Nevada State Athletic Commission for his fight with Mosley in so far as testing for performance enhancing drugs is concerned. The manner in which Mayweather chooses to implement this contract provision could reinforce or make a folly of his demand that Manny Pacquiao submit by contract to random blood testing - a demand which subsequently led to the cancellation of their proposed March 13 super-fight. It also raises a number of important issues and questions about the Mayweather-Mosley fight and its legitimacy in the eyes of the public.

1. If U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) testing was demanded for Mayweather-Pacquiao, will it be insisted upon by Floyd Mayweather for Mayweather vs Mosley?

2. What would the Nevada State Athletic Commission do if, just prior to the Mayweather vs Mosley fight, they received a positive test result?

3. If there is no public disclosure of the testing, how could the public be sure that a positive test would be reported to the Nevada State Athletic Commission?

4. If there is no public disclosure of the testing, a positive test could result in the fight being cancelled with a bogus reason for the cancellation being given to the public.

One boxing insider, when told of the contract terms for Mayweather-Mosley, said, “If Floyd Mayweather Jr does not demand the same stringent USADA testing by USADA of Mosley that he was demanding of Pacquiao, it would look hypocritical at best.” On January 17, SecondsOut’s senior columnist Thomas Hauser wrote a 10,000 word expose Mayweather-Pacquiao, PEDs, and Boxing. It was the most in-depth analysis ever of the issue of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) in boxing. The content of the story and the questions raised were applauded by those in the boxing industry and fans around the world.

In demanding that Pacquiao submit to Mayweather’s blood testing demands, Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, put themselves in a very delicate position for future fight agreements. Hauser wrote, “Golden Boy can take the lead on the issue of PEDs in boxing and become a beacon of integrity by requiring its fighters to submit to Olympic-style drug testing before each major fight. And in order to fight on a Golden Boy card (remember; Golden Boy has a lot of dates on HBO), it could require opponents to do the same.”

The contracts signed by Mayweather, Mosley, and Golden Boy Promotions, where blood testing is at Mayweather’s whim rather than a contractual requirement, call Golden Boy’s absolute demand of Pacquiao into question. Also at this time, there has been no announcement about any contractually mandated drug testing requirements for the April 3 Bernard Hopkins-Roy Jones Jr rematch, which is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Square Ring. Jones has previously tested positive for PEDs, while Hopkins (like Mosley) has never tested positive. However, it is a matter of record that Mosley did in fact use PEDs prior to his second fight against Oscar De La Hoya.

Mosley: “I don’t know if he’s [Mayweather] a coward or not”

World Boxing Association welterweight champion Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KO’s) gave his thoughts about his May 1st opponent Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an article at ABS-CBN News, saying “I don’t know if he’s a coward or not but what I know for this fight, he was forced to fight me. Aside from Manny [Pacquiao], this is the only big money for him [Mayweather] out there. If he’s afraid to fight Manny, “I’m not.” For Mosley to fight Pacquiao, he’s going to have to find a way to beat Mayweather on May 1st at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 38-year-old Mosley isn’t expected to beat Mayweather, despite his brave talk. Mayweather looks to be the better fighter at this point. Mosley hasn’t fought in over a year as he’s wasted time hoping that a big money fight would open up for him. Mosley had settled for a unification bout against WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, but that fight fell through recently when Berto pulled out due to the loss of some of his extended family in the Haiti earthquake.

Mosley says “Beating him [Floyd Mayweather] will put me to where I want to be placed in my career. That’s why, I’ll beat Floyd, then hopefully Manny will fight me.” If Mosley beats Mayweather, there’s little question that Pacquiao will fight Mosley.

The only question will be whether Mosley will ask for random blood testing like Mayweather did from Pacquiao. If that’s the case, Mosley might have to kiss goodbye any hopes of fighting Pacquiao unless he’s willing to accept a cut off period of 30 days or so for the fight. I doubt Pacquiao and his team will want to agree to blood testing within 30 days, if at all for a fight against Mosley.

Mosley, Mayweather reach terms

Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have agreed to terms for a welterweight super fight, Mayweather adviser Leonard Ellerbe said Friday. Later Friday, Mosley signed his contract in Las Vegas, Mosley's attorney Judd Burstein told ESPN.com.

"Shane has signed. I sat with him [Friday] and we went through every provision of the contract and he signed," Burstein said. "He is excited to move forward with the bout."

Mosley will defend his welterweight title against Mayweather on May 1 on HBO PPV at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Mayweather's signature is a formality, according to Burstein and Ellerbe.

"I confirmed with Leonard [on Friday night] that there are no issues," Burstein said.

"All of the deal points have been agreed to," Ellerbe said. "We still have to put pen to paper, but everything is agreed to. It's with the lawyers. Shane is a great fighter, one of the best of his era, and so is Floyd. It's going to be a great fight. It's a fight fans have wanted to see for a long time."

Ellerbe said that he expected Mayweather's paperwork to be completed in the next few days with a formal announcement likely next week.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Mayweather has the option for an immediate rematch in the event he loses.

The fight came together after an unexpected turn of events.

First, Mayweather became available for a fight three weeks ago when negotiations with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao disintegrated. They had agreed to all terms for a March 13 fight that loomed as the biggest in boxing -- except for a drug testing protocol.

They had agreed to random urine testing, but Mayweather also wanted random blood testing, even though that is not required under the rules of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Pacquiao agreed only to three blood tests, but none within 24 days of the fight, and the third one immediately after the bout.

Mayweather has alluded to Pacquiao using performance-enhancing drugs, even though he has never produced any evidence, and Floyd Mayweather Sr. has outright said he believes Pacquiao uses.

The rancor over the drug testing issue caused the fight to fall apart and Pacquiao moved on. He will defend his version of the 147-pound title against former titlist Joshua Clottey on March 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Then Mosley became available two weeks ago. He was scheduled to meet Andre Berto in a title unification bout at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Saturday night. However, Berto, a Haitian-American, withdrew from the bout after eight members of his extended family were killed in the earthquake in Haiti.

Immediately after the cancellation of Mosley-Berto, Mosley and Mayweather -- the former welterweight champ and pound-for-pound king until giving up the mantle during a brief retirement -- began negotiating.

"The negotiations were very cordial and went very smoothly," Ellerbe said.

Mosley has agreed to undergo random blood and urine testing, as has Mayweather, Ellerbe said.

Mosley has admitted to using PEDs and was connected to the BALCO scandal. Although he publicly denied using PEDs for years, Mosley admitted during grand jury testimony, which was later released, that he used designer steroids "the clear" and "the cream" and injected himself with EPO, a blood oxygen enhancer, during the lead-up to his 2003 rematch with Oscar De La Hoya. Mosley said he took the steroids unknowingly.

"Floyd only wants to be sure of an even playing field no matter who he fights," Ellerbe said.

There are plenty of things that frustrate me about Floyd Mayweather - but that does not alter my opinion of him as the best fighter in the world.

Bouts are made on his terms, he can be too safety first in the ring and risk averse when choosing opponents.

That said, his May 1 bout with Sugar Shane Mosley is fantastic news for boxing. It will be a great fight but ultimately it has come too late for 38-year-old Mosley.

Mayweather has built a career on avoiding hungry fighters at the top of their careers. He wouldn't even spar with James DeGale last year as he said he was too big.

He is facing Mosley at the right time. He looked shot a couple of years ago. I mean gone. He was beaten comprehensively by Miguel Cotto and then came back to fashion wins against Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito.

He looked reborn. You ask yourself how he did it. It is an obvious question given that Mosley's past is blighted by steroid association.

He claims he inadvertently used drugs supplied by the infamous BALCO lab before the Oscar De La Hoya bout in 2003, which he won.

Since Mosley has agreed to a meet the demands of Mayweather for a more rigorous Olympic-style drug-testing schedule, the sting is taken out of the issue.

What Will It Take For Mosley to Beat Mayweather?

You have to admit, Floyd Mayweather Jr. knows how to hype a fight. He’s also a master of engaging in psychological warfare against his opponents.
He’s no stranger to controversy or criticism, and he’s perfectly content with playing the role of the villain. He doesn’t seem to mind the fact that the majority of sweet science fans would consider witnessing a 10 second Mayweather mat-nap to be the sweetest treat of all.

The first key to success for Team Mosley was simply negotiating a deal that Mayweather would actually agree to. That may sound simple enough, but it has proven to be an extremely difficult task for many Mayweather opponents. For other would-be opponents, it has proven to be impossible. In recent history, the likelihood of success in Mayweather negotiations has appeared to be directly related to the perceived threat posed by the opposition. This time circumstances were different.

Boxing fans were unlikely to tune in to another Mayweather exhibition match against an unworthy opponent. He had inadvertently maneuvered himself into a situation that called for a big fight with an opponent who could actually offer him a run for his money.

Ironically, no doping allegations were made toward Mosley—an admitted former steroid user—while Pacquiao had been blatantly accused by members of the Mayweather camp. All reports indicated that the Mayweather—Mosley negotiations went smoothly.

After all the terms of Mayweather vs. Mosley were agreed upon, Mosley immediately signed the deal. Mayweather—on the other hand—delayed in signing the contract. What a shocker.
It’s unlikely that this delay had any significant effect on Mosley, but he surely must have begun to wonder about the reason for the holdup.
As Mayweather allowed days to pass without putting pen to paper, inevitably, boxing fans began to wonder if something fishy was going on. Many writers began to capitalize on the postponement by speculating that Mayweather was looking for a way out.
Was he planning to duck another great fighter? To some it appeared that the stage was being set for the announcement of another mega-fight fallout, and this would have likely been a career-ender for “Money” Mayweather.

As an apparent subscriber to the “all publicity is good publicity” theory— Floyd’s delay could have been a promotional tactic designed to keep boxing fans on the edge of their seats. If that was his intention, the strategy was quite lackluster in comparison to the drama that led to the demise of the Pacquiao—Mayweather bout.

Some of the most loyal members of the he-man Floyd-haters club actually hoped that Mayweather wouldn’t sign, as this would have been perceived as indisputable evidence in support of their claims that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has a history of ducking fighters that he considers to be legitimate threats. Comments sections of boxing articles everywhere would have been immediately flooded with “Kentucky Fraud Gayweather” criticisms. Others recognized his tactics as what they really were—just an attention-seeking ploy to sustain himself as the main topic of conversation in the boxing community. It seems that Mayweather thrives on controversy.

Controversy aside, to the delight of most true boxing enthusiasts, Mayweather didn’t wimp out. He didn’t “retire”, he didn’t ask another lightweight to make the leap to welterweight, and he didn’t pick a fight with some guy that nobody had ever heard of.
Though the older Mosley is considered the underdog, the No. 3 ranked pound-for-pound boxer in the sport is a formidable opponent. How formidable remains to be seen. Can he actually beat Mayweather?

In 1974, people were asking this question: “Can Muhammad Ali beat “Big” George Foreman?” The answer from nearly every boxing fan came in the form of a resounding “Absolutely not!”
Foreman had an immaculate record of 40-0. Let me repeat…40-0. He hadn’t gone past Rnd. 2 in his previous eight fights. He was too young. He was too big. He was too strong. It was impossible for Ali to defeat George Foreman!

Ali didn’t mind. He beat him anyway.

Mayweather-Mosley Fight Finalized

Mayweather vs Mosley fight - Floyd Mayweather Jr. finalized a deal Wednesday to fight Sugar Shane Mosley on May 1 in a welterweight bout at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) agreed to the 12-round bout last week,
but hadn't formally signed the contract for the former pound-for-pound champion's second fight back from a brief retirement.

"This one is definitely for the fans, as I wasn't going to waste anyone's time with a meaningless tuneup bout and asked to fight Shane immediately," Mayweather said. "I have said ever since I came back to the sport that I only wanted to fight the best. I think Shane is one of the best, but come May 1, he still won't be great enough to beat me."

Although the fight is an intriguing matchup between two veteran welterweights who have been circling each other for a decade, the dangerous Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs) still isn't Mayweather's first choice.

Mayweather agreed to the bout only after several weeks of negotiations with Manny Pacquiao failed to produce an agreement on what's likely to be the richest fight in boxing history, if it ever occurs. Pacquiao balked at Mayweather's stringent drug-testing demands, and instead will fight welterweight Joshua Clottey on March 13 at Cowboys Stadium.

Mayweather and Mosley also agreed to participate in Olympic-style drug testing for their fight, saying they hope to set a new standard for safety in boxing. Mosley has acknowledged using steroids before a victory over Oscar De La Hoya in 2003, but claims he did so inadvertently through a strength and conditioning coach who had connections with the BALCO lab.

"I'm real disappointed and real angry to be linked to juicing and steroids, because that's just not me," Mosley told The Associated Press in a phone interview. "I don't need to do that stuff. I like the testing for this fight. I want it, because I want to prove that everything I've done is all me, and not about steroids. I've never tested positive for anything, but I want everybody to know who I really am."

Mosley was scheduled to fight Andre Berto on Jan. 30 at Mandalay Bay before Berto dropped out while dealing with the earthquake in Haiti, his family's home country. Mosley expressed only sympathy for Berto's family, but the setback quickly evolved into a chance for a major bout.

"I knew that there was a fight around the corner," Mosley said. "I knew that Mayweather needed a dancing partner, and who else was he going to dance with? I'm a little stronger and wiser now. I'm very smart. Nothing he can do is going to rattle me and make me feel any different. I'm already in good shape, and I'm going into it feeling good."

Mosley, the 38-year-old WBA welterweight super champion, has been vocal about his desire to meet Mayweather ever since Mayweather celebrated his ring return last September with a one-sided victory over Juan Manuel Marquez. Mosley, a partner in Golden Boy Promotions, jumped into the ring after Mayweather's win and called out the unbeaten fighter.

But Mayweather appeared to be focused on the biggest payday of
all against Pacquiao until his hard line on drug testing scuttled the fight and prompted Pacquiao to sue much of Mayweather's camp, claiming several members had defamed him by intimating he uses performance-enhancing drugs.

"Shane Mosley is one of the greatest fighters of this era, and I commend him for not only agreeing to the fight against Mayweather, but also agreeing to participate in a testing process that can only help the integrity of the sport," Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said.

Mayweather didn't sign the deal until five days after Mosley formalized his commitment last Friday, prompting worries for Mosley's management and Schaefer, who represented Mayweather throughout the torturous negotiations with Pacquiao's promoters at Top Rank. Schaefer had hoped to get both fighters to Miami this week to promote the bout to the assembled fans and media at the Super Bowl.

Just a few days ago, Schaefer publicly acknowledged he was worried Mayweather might be having second thoughts about a tough fight against Mosley, who has only improved with age.

Mosley's only loss since late 2004 is a narrow, competitive decision to Miguel Cotto in November 2007. He has fought just twice since then, stopping Ricardo Mayorga and former champion Antonio Margarito, although Mosley was scheduled for fights against Zab Judah and Berto that were canceled by his opponents.

"I've been fighting better and better in my career," Mosley said. "I always trained hard, and now I'm training smarter and better. I'm ready for this."

Mayweather should have the services of Roger Mayweather, his uncle and longtime trainer. Roger Mayweather has a June 1 trial date in Las Vegas on several serious charges related to accusations of beating and choking a female boxer last summer at an apartment he owned.

Shane Mosley vs. Floyd Mayweather JR: The Next Best Thing?

We watched as the fight was signed, sealed, and well…almost delivered. While specifics are a bit unjust, and highly opinionated; a new story has evolved. That is, a potential Shane Mosley vs. Floyd Mayweather super fight. While this bout seems to present most of the community with a “eh” type of attitude, will this fight potentially become the next best thing for Floyd Mayweather, or even Shane Mosley?

For quite some time, Shane Mosley has eagerly been awaiting a super fight with the undefeated kingpin, Floyd Mayweather JR. This comes as no surprise to most, who witnessed Mosley intervening during the post fight chat, while Mayweather was conversing with Max Kellerman after the Marquez bout. True to his nature, Floyd was a bit disgusting with Shane’s relentless call-outs, and accused Mosley of disrespect. The flipside is Shane Mosley is a welterweight warrior. A true warrior who has never declined, dodged, or evaded the supreme beings of the lightweight, welterweight, and light middleweight divisions..

Of course most fans do not need my arguments to justify Shane Mosley’s disposition in boxing today. Though, it seems the Mosley versus Mayweather match should become the next best thing for boxing. Nonetheless, I would imagine that most onlookers would view this fight as erroneous, constantly bashing the ultimate demise of Mosley himself. It’s this aspect alone that will ultimately draw the fans, and cause the gears to turn on who will win, and/or dominate this matchup.

Most professional fighters who face Mayweather are simply mismatched, give or take a few opponents. Floyd Mayweather has proved that he is a supreme being in the welterweight division with his fast adjustments and work rate. Consequently, it seems strange that a Mosley-Mayweather fight has never ensued because Mayweather is known for hand-picking opposition he can fare well against. Call me crazy; doesn’t it seem strange that these two welterweight fighters have never squared off against each other in the ultimate welterweight showdown?

When you compare both fighters to each other it seems there is no contest. Floyd Mayweather has perfected his art of boxing under the tutelage of Roger and Floyd Mayweather SR. His fast adjustment rate, lodged with his supreme defensive tactics, makes Floyd the better fighter. However, both fighters in Mosley and Mayweather possess experience, power, knowledge, and a “can do” attitude in the ring. For veteran fighters alone, it seems Mosley’s only advantage would remain in his fists. No doubt, Shane has shown recently, that his power has not diminished at all. On the flipside Mayweather also has decent power, but nothing relative to Mosley.

A quick two step comparison to Mosley and Mayweather would be Antonio Margarito, and Juan Manuel Marquez. While these two prospects might not be the best comparison it will suffice for our fancy. How would Mayweather fair against Antonio Margarito? With Mayweather being a sound tactical technician, it seems Mayweather would have no problem blasting the “Tijuana Tornado.” On the opposite end of the ring, it would appear Mosley would most likely dominate, or even knockout Juan Manuel Marquez the same way Mayweather did. Nevertheless, it seems these comparisons would ultimately prove no one is the better man in this aspect.

Supposedly, the date for this welterweight clash is May 1, 2010. However, neither party has officially signed any paperwork just yet. According to Golden Boy Promotions, they already have the arena reserved for May 1at Mandalay Bay. Then again folks, this is boxing; anything can happen! Ultimately, the concept of this welterweight clash seems likely. Shane Mosley has been patiently waiting for this opportunity to get his crack at Floyd Mayweather. This, along with the fire burning inside of Mosley will no doubt cement a great fight for the year of 2010. As for the outcome; there are so many probabilities on who will win and/or dominate this fight. Either way, this is one fight that will ultimately solidify the welterweight division, and bring prized hopes to the winner of this welterweight clash.

Mayweather-Mosley: Super fight or Super scam?

Who in his right mind could deny that of the two upcoming welterweight clashes, Mayweather-Mosley and Pacquiao-Clottey, Mayweather-Mosley is by far the more exciting prospect? In the sad absence of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight this is certainly the next best thing. Fans have been willing this fight to happen for years. This would be Mayweather`s biggest challenge for years. This fight is the chance Mosley has wanted for years. This bout could so easily become a legend. It has just about all the required elements to rightfully claim to be a genuine `super fight`.

The further prospect of the winners of each fight meeting later on in 2010 is even more exhilarating. What a truly historic fight that would be! And then for that matter, why not stage another fight between the respective losers? The failure of the Mayweather and Pacquiao negotiations might well turn out to be a blessing in disguise. We could end up having four really competitive welterweight matches this year, and at least two of these would certainly become instant classics. This is exactly the sort of `shot to the arm` boxing needs. Great fights in a hugely competitive division. And let us not forget that the four boxers mentioned above are by no means the only great welterweights today. Also considering the recent trend of division hopping, who knows who might pop up or down to stake a welterweight claim? At last, things are really `hotting` up.

Emmanuel Stewart and Teddy Atlas have shared their thoughts with us on the Mayweather-Mosley fight in an article given to BoxingScene.com. Atlas; “For Mayweather it`s the toughest fight he could have taken. You have to give him credit.” Stewart; “It`s a very interesting fight.” “They both have something to prove.” They both go on to give their own personal takes on the fight, how close it will, how emotional it will be, and how big a test it will be for each fighter. It really does seem that this is going to be one of those `whatever-you-do-don`t-miss-it` fights.

And then I woke up...

I`m sorry, guys, but I just don`t buy it. I think it must have been the `you gotta get excited about this`, hard-sell by Stewart and Atlas that brought me back to my senses. I mean this is Teddy `Alleged e-mail` Atlas and Emmanuel `I never actually saw it` Stewart we are talking about. You don`t have to be Einstein to work out where their allegiances lie. One recent article on Boxing News 24 sports the title “Mayweather-Mosley steals the thunder away from Pacquiao-Clottey bout”, and that is a true statement. The thunder of a match that IS going to take place between two of the world`s best welterweights is being stolen by a hypothetical bout. Mayweather-Mosley has been a simple figment people`s imagination for years. This bout, in my opinion, is no closer to becoming a reality than it ever was, and will remain forever imaginary. Sorry Teddy, I don`t have to give Mayweather credit until he actually fights.

Just look at the timing of the two bouts. They have been planned 6 or 7 weeks apart. Could that be just long enough to come up with an excuse as to why the fight cannot go ahead? Broken ribs in training? Sore finger, have to retire? Trainer not collecting his 200 dollars as he shoots past GO? Or even simpler, one of the fighters asks for too much money so the whole deal falls through. Or there`s a dispute about some sort of unprecedented demands.

By now we should all be aware that outside the ring boxing is often more akin to chess than to a straightforward combat sport. Promoters think 3, 4, 5, or more moves ahead. How easy it would to `steal the thunder` from a good fight by pretending there will be an even better fight at some time shortly afterwards. You can`t cheat at chess, but you can be as devious as you like. Both Mayweather and the guys at GBP are probably very angry with Pacquiao right now. A move like this would not at all be surprising.

Perhaps Pacquiao has boxed Mayweather into a corner by putting together the Clottey fight, forcing Floyd to take on the best available opponent. I sincerely hope that this is the case, and I would love that truly brilliant boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. to prove me wrong. I would love to see him `man up` and take on Shane Mosley, and may the best man win. But I refuse to allow a fight I quite honestly cannot believe will ever materialise spoil the build-up a fight that I know will.

Look forward to Mayweather-Mosley all you want, but do not be surprised if you never get to look back on it.

Who's The Real Shane Mosley In 2010?

Now that the Mayweather vsMosley bout is signed and scheduled to take place on May 1st, the speculation as to who will win has begun. Shane and Floyd are two of the greatest and most complete fighters to grace the sport of professional boxing over the last 20 years. Mayweather who will turn 33 later this month and Mosley who will be 39 a few months after the fight are two of the best welterweights in the world. Obviously Manny Pacquiao has to be included in that conversation as well. Most likely Pacquiao would be a slight underdog against Mayweather and a slight favorite over Mosley.

As of this writing Mayweather looks to be the surer bet over Mosley when it comes to which one of them will show up having retained their A-game on the night of May 1st. Floyd looked tremendous in dismantling Juan Manuel Marquez in his last bout. In his previous fight against Ricky Hatton he looked to be at the top of his game and performed better than he did in his signature winning bout versus Oscar De La Hoya a little more than two and a half years ago.

Shane Mosley fought one of the most complete fights of his career a little over a year ago when he took apart and stopped the tough and durable Antonio Margarito in his last fight. It was also Mosley's first fight with his new trainer Nazeem Richardson. Under Richardson's tutelage, Shane exhibited great holding and clenching skills which were exactly what he needed to do in order to disrupt and impede Margarito's aggression and strength.

Nazeem appears to have infused life into Mosley at the twilight of his career. The only thing that's unclear... is the Margarito fight a good indicator of who Mosley is as a fighter in 2010? Did Shane match up well with Margarito or is he really the fighter who was being written off after losing a decision to Miguel Cotto and then coming on to stop the crude and wild swinging Ricardo Mayorga in the last round in his last bout before meeting Margarito?

What Mosley shows up to face Floyd Mayweather this coming May will determine what kind of a fight boxing fans will see. If it's the Mosley who had a hard time getting off versus Mayorga until Ricardo slowed and became more predictable and easier to time than he normally is, Mayweather will run away with the fight. And if it's the Mosley who got caught in between styles fighting Cotto, Mayweather will pot-shot him and stay a step ahead of him the entire fight.

The last thing Mosley can let happen against Mayweather is for him to try and show Floyd something different from round to round. If Shane comes out aggressively, looking to put Floyd away with one big punch, he'll think he's punching at a sheet draped over a clothes line hanging in his neighbor's backyard. And if he tries to bring Mayweather to him looking for the big counter, he'll come in second every time because Mayweather has the reach, hand speed and instincts to beat Mosley playing tag.

On the other hand if Mosley fights with the same purpose and ring savvy he exhibited against Margarito, then the fight has a chance to be a memorable one. Against Margarito, Mosley boxed from the outside as Antonio was trying to shrink the ring and force it on the inside. Once he got there Mosley tied him up and clinched - thus impeding Margarito's aggression and forcing him to reset and start over. Then when Margarito tried to change it up and inch his way towards Mosley behind his jab, Shane sensed the subtle change and fought more aggressively, utilizing his superior hand speed and made Margarito pay a price on the way in and set him up to be taken out later in the fight.

For the Margarito fight, Mosley's trainer Nazeem Richardson drew up the perfect fight plan and Mosley followed it to the letter. And in doing that he had to fight himself along the way because Shane likes to attack and trade when he's under fire. However, Richardson apparently reached Mosley and convinced him trading and going to war with Margarito wasn't the way to go.

At this time Richardson has to be considered one of the three or four best trainers in professional boxing. Now he has to come up with a fight-plan for an almost 39-year-old Mosley to somehow draw Mayweather into a knockdown, drag-out fight in order for him to have his best chance to beat the favored Mayweather. And for him to do that, Mosley will have to have retained enough of his physical skills and weapons to carry out the plan against what will surely be an uncooperative Mayweather.

If Mosley is to hand Mayweather his first pro defeat, he'll have to force the fight on the inside and somehow keep it there for a majority of the time. Mayweather likes his opponent to bring the fight to him, but has never been confronted by an opponent who had fast hands who's stronger than him. Mosley has to force Mayweather to trade hooks and uppercuts with him while his back is on the ropes. To do that he'll have to be in great shape and also be elusive enough to make Mayweather's jab miss him with some consistency. If Shane is too upright as he's moving in, Mayweather will pepper him with his left-jab and score with some crowd stopping left-hooks off it.

Mosley does not need to be creative to beat Mayweather (if he's going to beat him, that is.) He has to be completely consistent, start to finish. And he doesn't have to worry about whether his shots are catching Floyd clean early in the fight, he just has to stay on him, landing anywhere he can.

The question that cannot be answered until fight night is - is Shane Mosley the measured and calculated physical force that took apart Antonio Margarito or is he the fighter who looked a little better than ordinary versus Cotto and Mayorga but certainly not extraordinary. When Mosley steps into the ring to fight Floyd Mayweather he'll becoming off the longest period of inactivity of his 17 year career. Add to that Mayweather is the most accurate and best counter-puncher he will have faced during his career, and that's not a good recipe to go into a fight with Mayweather.

As of late Mosley's speech and diction haven't been as sharp and clear as it once was. I hope that's more the case of me catching him on and off day or after a tough gym session. But in all honesty that scares me as to what Mosley has left. When it was discussed that he was going to fight Joshua Clottey it was stated here that in my opinion that was a bad matchup for him. Once that fight fell through and the fight with Andre Berto was made, I felt that Shane wasn't a lock to win that one.

Mayweather from a style and mindset vantage-point will present Mosley more problems than either Clottey or Berto could've. I'm not going to guess at this time what version of Mosley will show up. What I do know is if he's not the fighter we saw versus Margarito, Floyd Mayweather will have a lot to do with him looking spent and on the severe decline.
